Why Kanye West is a genius
Shukeralla 19 May, 2020 @ 8:31pm
Thats the beautiful thing. Kanye doesn’t need to memorize entire symphonies off of one listen. There is no one way to be genius, nor is there only one field that can declare a genius. If you argue that creativity isn’t important, then you are one of the huge problems with this country. Just because he is a musician instead of a scientist doesn’t make him any less of a genius. He didn’t choose what his calling would be. Its not his fault he is right brained instead of left. That said, in order to see Kanye’s genius, you need to look at trends that don’t actually include him. Kanye’s genius comes in the form of copycats and shifts in the music landscape in the months and years after he drops a project. Every one of his albums differs in what they bring to the table. I will use 808s and Yeezus as examples, but could honestly use any of his albums (except TLOP, its too early for that). In

808s (2008), Kanye sang throughout the entirety of the album. I know this doesn’t really sound crazy, but if it weren’t for this album, it would still be unheard of. The reviews were generally not very favorable and no one could really grasp why he would do such a thing. Of course, we now know it was the result of multiple tragedies happening in his life at the same time and Kanye felt that the only way he could truly express himself was through singing. Also note, Kanye once said “I’d rather piss a bunch of people off and make myself happy than make everyone else happy and be pissed off inside.” Anyways, it was a magical moment because no one really knew what to say when the album came out. Most people kinda just ignored it. But then something beautiful happened. Man on the Moon: The End of The Day (2009) dropped, in addition to many other more “singy” albums. I could list examples for

days but I think you get the point, rap finally accepted singing. If 808s hadn’t happened, Kid Cudi would not be a person, and, most likely, the biggest artist in music right now, Drake, wouldn’t be either. Another huge facet of 808s, was the massive use of autotune. And yes, I know T-Pain was using it and Lil Wayne to an extent, but never was it brought to the forefront of society and rap as it was with 808s. Nowadays you see autotune everywhere, every big “soundcloud rapper” is using it to enhance their sound and some people are even adopting it as their full time sound. Without 808s there would also be no Travis Scott. In regards to Yeezus, obviously I am going to bring up the electronic influences. Again, most people didn’t know what to do with the album when it dropped. Personally, when I first heard it, I hated that ♥♥♥♥. I couldn’t believe Kanye had done this. It was so harsh

and sounded completely unfinished and abrasive. I didn’t listen to it at all after the first go around and completely forgot about it. But when I came back to it a year later? Beautiful. And why was this? Surely my tastes hadn’t changed that drastically in one short year. Of course they didn’t. I was gradually exposed to more and more electronic and EDM music through artists that I already listened to without even realizing it. Now there is even an entire subgenre of rap, Dance Rap (Goldlink, Towkio), that wouldn’t even be a thought without this genre changing album. Im sure if you looked at any of your favorite rappers discogs from 2013 onwards, you would find some sort of EDM influences. And that is 100% a result of Kanye West. As you can see, I truly do believe that Kanye West is the greatest artist of our time, a genius, and the most influential artist in a long while. So yea, just

because he didn’t discover gravity (which was a thing even if Einstein never existed so ♥♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥) doesn’t mean he isnt a genius in his own right. Sure Kanye, may sound like a crazy person sometimes, but he speaks his mind, and tackles some very important issues. Even his MTV awards show speech or whatever award show that was about “Its all about the kids, bro” was a genius speech if you focus on what he is actually saying. He just does things his own way. Nothing irks me more than people saying they hate Kanye cause of his attitude. First of all, he earned the right to be so cocky. Secondly, please just this man off of his actual input to the music industry and not his persona. And lastly, if you actually hate someone you don’t know cause of the way they’re portrayed by the media, you need to grow up.
