The Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own)

The 28th Corps of eight companies was arranged as a result of a meeting arranged by Mr G T Dempsey, an Irishman resident in London, at his rooms in Essex Street, Strand in the later weeks of 1859. Headquarters were placed at Burlington House and the first officers' commissions were dated 28 February 1860. It is of interest to note that out of the nineteen officers recorded in the Army List for December 1860, no less than five held titles: the Marquis of Donegal (lieutenant colonel), Lord Otho A Fitzgerald (captain), Lord Ashley (captain), Lord Francis N Conynhham (lieutenant) and the Earl of Belmore (ensign). Headquarters were transferred to York Buildings, Adeplhi in 1866, Leicaster Square in 1869, King William Street in 1873 and Duke Street, Charing Cross in 1897. The 28th was renumbered as 16th in 1880 and became a volunteer battalion (without change of title) of the Rifle Brigade in 1881. ♔
