The Renault Twingo is a Renault mini-sized city model. Created in 1993, this mini-car came to revolutionize European cities. Initially, it was conceived to have only one type of body, one version and one engine. The body has 3 minivan type doors (this was the model that encouraged other brands to make minivan type city dwellers). The name Twingo is a mixture of "Twin", "Twist" and "Tango". Designed under the direction of Patrick Le Quément, Renault's chief designer. The car was derived from a series of concepts developed through the W60 project, when Gaston Juchet was Renault's chief designer.First generation

The initial version had only as an option Air Conditioning and Panoramic Ceiling, being available in several bright and cheerful colors. Its rear seats fold and lie down, which along with the front seats, made it a bed or perhaps a van.

Its engine was the reliable 1237 c.c. (1.2 liters-4 cil.) and 55hp. However, the good reception of the public and the need to create a Twingo tailored to each one brought several packages of equipment (Pack - Electric windows, central door closing with remote control, electric mirrors, etc.). Several limited series were also manufactured with interiors and upholstery for each series (Zoom, Spring, Kenzo, Alizé etc.) and normally equipped with the Pack, with some series including airbag and air conditioning (Kenzo).

Another revolution of the Renault Twingo was the Easy version in which the four-speed gearbox was manual, but with a piloted clutch (dispensing the clutch pedal), it is a good option for those who need a car with only 2 pedals but do not want a gearbox automatic.

The original Renault Twingo was launched in April 1993, was sold in European left-hand markets until August 2007 and was restyled in 1998, 2000, and 2004. It was never sold in right-hand markets (England).

Since the first half of the 2000s, sales have been declining, making Renault decide that the time is right to launch the new Renault Twingo, but with a completely renewed look. Production of the previous model was completed in 2007, and the new model: Renault Twingo II is expected in mid-2007.

In Series 14, Episode 4 of Top Gear, presenter Jeremy Clarkson tested the Twingo 133 on the streets of Belfast and the barrel rolled upside down through a sewer tunnel. After numerous accidents, he hurried to catch a departing ferry instead of landing in the ocean.

On March 16, 2011, the Renault Twingo won the "Best City Car Award" at the Parkers New Car Awards.

The Renault Twingo II would end in 2014 with the new Renault Twingo III.
