alien storm is free and supposedly quite good. haven't played very much myself though
Forrest 12 May, 2011 @ 6:23am
Yo dudes, I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes - anyone try Alien Swarm? 4 player co-op? Aliens? Guns?! Sounds almost too good to be true
Bubba 4 Mar, 2011 @ 10:47pm
Wow James...79,996 killed to date. Sam's a close second at 72,000 and some change. I guess I won't be catching up anytime soon.
Lt. Dan 1 Feb, 2011 @ 1:14am
ok nvm found out how to join specific servers.
man, couldn't even go to bed before figuring it out first! =)
Lt. Dan 1 Feb, 2011 @ 12:44am
we found a helms deep server with hilarious mods but don't know how to join it specifically

IP is 63.215.74.64:27015

Mmmmm..... TANKBURGER!

Helm's Deep rocks!
Bubba 18 Dec, 2010 @ 3:41pm
Hey guys, sorry about not having the server updated for yesterday evening, I was out at the bar getting smashed at another work Christmas party. All good to go...have a good time playing tonight.
Forrest 28 Nov, 2010 @ 7:12pm
Damn you all! I'm losing sleep over Borderlands... AGAIN! Orange Box is on sale for $7.50. How 'bout TF2, folks? Also James, you'll need to pick a new 'Player of the Week' - don't forget to post a reason; any reason will do!
Forrest 26 Nov, 2010 @ 9:24pm
Ed also just bought BL, so I thought I should let you all know, it's not a game for everyone :) L4D2 is great because you can just pick it up and it also has servers like how our awesome dude, Ben, has been running for us. The online experience of BL is not nearly on the same level. Just my 2 cents before you plunk some cash down.
Forrest 26 Nov, 2010 @ 4:39pm
Yeah, no dedicated server for Borderlands. I tried out the advanced settings tool that you can find on the Steam forums here and it works well: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1085076
Bubba 26 Nov, 2010 @ 1:28pm
Tried looking up info for setting up a dedicated Borderlands server...no such luck. The game was not designed around a dedicated hosting platform, at least not for the PC.
Bubba 26 Nov, 2010 @ 1:24pm
L4D2 server is up. No updates were downloaded, I'll try again later just in case.
Bubba 26 Nov, 2010 @ 1:23pm
For those of us with Borderlands:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=998374

Some good tweaks to take note off if you plan on running the game on less capable hardware.
Loungin 22 Nov, 2010 @ 9:46pm
Exhilirating finish on Gnome.. Managed to get Bridge over Trebled Slaughter with James today but he made the ultimate sacrifice.. we did it a few times again after and I swore that he did one way faster than the run we did to get it but didn't come up.. I think he'll do better without me and just slaughter the rest of the group as I was holding him back on the last few runs.. James + M60 = deadly
Bubba 22 Nov, 2010 @ 2:21pm
Looking at the achievements, it has been a busy weekend for us all. Great killing everyone! Finally finished "Dark Carnival", that, or any campaign, I guess, is hard to do when playing by yourself and 3 AI units.
Forrest 21 Nov, 2010 @ 9:51pm
Hear, hear! A most exhilarating gname!
le professional 21 Nov, 2010 @ 1:44pm
Thanks everyone. The "bring the gnome home" event was a great success.
Forrest 15 Nov, 2010 @ 5:04pm
Notes for "Stache Whacker", also in Dark Carnival:

1. You'll need a melee weapon, but the axe or other wide arc types are preferred. Most of us have seen the whack-a-mole game just outside the arena gates.

2. One tip is to swing the moment you hear Moustachio's voice from the machine. They also advise aiming for the middle of the back row.

3. 40 or 50 points should get you the achievement.

And of course no surprise, the horde comes when you win :)
le professional 15 Nov, 2010 @ 1:09am
Thanks Sam for finally helping us get through the Carnival. Too bad we dropped the Gnome on the roller coaster ride. Again, all I can say is : stupid Gnome.
le professional 14 Nov, 2010 @ 7:04pm
I did the gong show with a Katana, so I think any melee weapon will work.
Forrest 14 Nov, 2010 @ 6:14pm
If you're going for "Gong Show" in Dark Carnival, what do you need?

1. If possible, hoard an adrenaline shot from the beginning of the campaign for as long as possible.

2. You'll need a baseball bat; I don't know about the other melee weapons, but a baseball bat is guaranteed.

3. On the stage with the bumper cars, you'll see the Mustachio strength test just before the cars. Pop the shot, pound the red striker and voila - "GONG SHOW"

Just be careful 'cus the bell sound calls more zombies!
Forrest 14 Nov, 2010 @ 5:21pm
If you’re going for the gnome achievement, a few tips:

1. You need at least 3 people in the shooting gallery to get enough points to win the stupid gnome in the first place, and everyone should be packing an automatic weapon. If you mess up, just go get some ammo around the corner. One person should be guarding everyone else.

2. You can do a push-back with the gnome similar to the gas can, but it doesn’t really hurt the zombies.

3. The gnome is not fragile at all. It survives everything: spitter goo, charger smashes, tank chucking, the whole shebang.

4. If everything is going to hell during the finale, you’re better off to get out of the chopper, die and restart the finale rather than to lose track of the gnome and then fly off with nothing at all.

Good luck!
Forrest 13 Nov, 2010 @ 6:10pm
mad props to ya - I've got a ways to go. At the current rate of 300 zombies per hour, I'll need another 10 hours! LOL
le professional 13 Nov, 2010 @ 5:28pm
Woot, finally broke 10K zombies killed.
Bubba 13 Nov, 2010 @ 12:58am
Hey guys...hope you have fun playing tonight. Sorry I couldn't stick around...the lag was pretty bad...higher/slower than Bert's connection from China. Take care...have a good weekend.
Bubba 6 Nov, 2010 @ 9:10pm
Looks like Steam/Valve likes to update their games on Friday morning/afternoon. I'll work on setting up an automated tasks to shutdown the server in the morning, run the update, and then start the server back up.
Bubba 2 Nov, 2010 @ 2:53am
If you used the following path, extract the .zip file you download and move/copy the .vpk file to the following path:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\addons

Then go into the game, Options menu and enable the addon (check mark).

Enjoy...I tested it on the server.

Death Aboard 2
http://www.l4dmaps.com/details.php?file=4861

Death Aboard 2 is the convertion to L4D2 of the popular Death Aboard campaign for L4D. In Death Aboard you start out in a prison and work your way out to the nearest docks area. From here, you board a stranded ship and finally to an island where there will be a lighthouse as a finale.

Please ensure you have the Left 4 Dead 2 Add-on Support installed.
Bubba 1 Nov, 2010 @ 8:04pm
Hey guys, we had a good turnout this past weekend for some versus action. Incredibly fun...something we'll have to do again soon.

Anyway, I'll be adding a new campaign, once I know it works off of the server I'll let you guys know which one I installed so you can do the same. For those of you who purchased Left 4 Dead (1) or already own it, like myself, I will have dedicated server up and running for that game by the weekend as well. Once it's all done, please provide any feedback you have on the performance of the server...if it needs an upgrade I'll get it done.

I'll shelve the idea of settingup a separate voice/chat server for now. Managing it will be harder when we play versus-mode games as we would need to multi-task out of the game, swap the players around in the voice program and then switch back to the game. Cumbersome and needless since L4D has a very good built-in voice/chat functionality.
Forrest 30 Oct, 2010 @ 3:49am
Hey man, server is running awesome for me. Thanks Ben. I usually flake out during the flinales on other servers, but on yours I have no problems. And basically no lag. I hope it holds up for Sat nite. Looking forward to the versus action if we get enough!
Bubba 29 Oct, 2010 @ 4:33pm
Looks like we'll have quite a few players this weekend. If you guys can, try running more than one campaign at the same time. Also, try out a versus game if you can. I'll run some performance monitors in the background. If I still have bandwidth leftover but the server is heavily taxed, I have a spare quad-core or faster dual-core that I can upgrade to if need be. If I do that, I can then use the hardware from the current server to build a communications server to host Teamspeak or Ventrilo.

Bert, thanX again for the avatars, you guys are looking good. James, we need to find you a good one that suits you. Anything in particular you want me and Bert to edit?

Have a Happy Halloween weekend everyone! See you guys online.
Bubba 29 Oct, 2010 @ 4:25pm
Push the Boomer back (right-mouse click) if it's too close to shoot at.
For the Smoker, you can shoot the tongue if you can't get a clear shot at the Smoker itself.
Be mindful of the weapons you choose at the beginning of each level. If some of the other players have short range weapons (like the shotgun) get a ranged weapon like a rifle if you can, just to balance it out.
Like the pipe bomb, the Infected people love the bile. Toss it far away to get the horde off of you.

Most of this will be second nature after a few rounds.
Forrest 28 Oct, 2010 @ 1:53am
Overly paternal teacher instinct here. Post your #1 piece of L4D2 advice for the new guys! Here's mine: Melee weapons are really powerful and better than guns in many ways. Get comfy with their timing and slashing style! Others?
Forrest 28 Oct, 2010 @ 1:23am
Hey everybody, I've tried to add my brother, Ron, to the group. Welcome and add Chumpman!
Bubba 27 Oct, 2010 @ 11:29pm
Where's Lt. Dan?!
Forrest 27 Oct, 2010 @ 10:56pm
3 minute run on Normal? Not too shabby. I try out the server when I can, but most likely by the weekend. Tried to add Hair to my friends list, but can't find him yet?
Bubba 27 Oct, 2010 @ 12:11am
Hey guys, here's an old guide where many options still apply to L4D2.

http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_1.html

Also, hopefully those who have tried the server I setup have some feedback, please post. I wll be doing maintenance on the server in the next couple of days before the weekend. What I plan to do is not for the L4D2 server itself but for the machine hosting it. More on that later, hope you guys are having fun on the server. Bert, please try it out when you can.
Lt. Dan 26 Oct, 2010 @ 11:52pm
3 minute run! hahahahaah
Bubba 25 Oct, 2010 @ 11:40pm
Welcome James!
Bubba 25 Oct, 2010 @ 11:39pm
Hey guys, I figured it out. It was actually working all along.

Anyway, when you start the game and get to the main menu within the game, you'll notice along the bottom edge of your screen there will be a list of private Steam Group servers - you will see the Rogue Squad 7 server. Don't click on that as you will then be forced to accept the default map which I have to specify when I create a dedicated server.

Instead, just select Play Campaign from the main screen and as usual then select Play with Friends. Next Create a New Campaign Lobby. In this Friends-Only Game, select all the goodies like Campaign, Difficulty, Permissions. For Server Type, select Steam Group Server. Now select Create Lobby. Once you have all selected you characters, Start the game. You'll then be brought to the Steam Group Servers screen. Ignore what it says about the map and settings, it will show what was last played priot. Just select Join Game and away you go!
Lt. Dan 25 Oct, 2010 @ 9:42pm
Thanks Bubba. Appreciate all the efforts...
Bubba 25 Oct, 2010 @ 5:57pm
Hey guys, I've had some much better success with the dedicated server today. Only major item I'm having an issue with is the game lobby. Right now, can't get ti to allow you to choose settings such as campaign and difficulty - I have to set it on the server first. I know there is a setting to allow it as we do it with other dedicated servers we join.
