The Papal State(s), the State(s) of the Church, the Pontifical States, the Ecclesiastical States, or the Roman States were among the major historical states of Italy from roughly the 6th century until the Italian peninsula was unified in 1861 by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

The Papal States comprised territories under direct sovereign rule of the papacy, and at its height it covered most of the modern Italian regions of Romagna, Marche, Umbria and Lazio. This governing power is commonly called the temporal power of the Pope, as opposed to his ecclesiastical primacy.

~Rules of the Papal States~
1. A Pope rules for life.
2. Upon the "death" of the Pope, all the Cardinals and Archbishops gather and elect a new Pope from the Cardinals (so only Cardinals or the Cardinal-Bishop can be choosen to become Pope).
3. The Pope is neutral in every war unless the war is brought to the Papal States or her Catholic allies.
4. All Cardinals will be chosen by the Pope
5. All Archbishops and Bishops will be chosen by the leader of the country and the Pope together
6. The Pope may excommunicate any nation he sees as a threat to Christendom.
7. The Camerlengo is chosen by the Pope, he is the Pope's second-in-command.
8. During the vacany of the office of the Pope, the Camerlengo will perform the Pope's duties.
