Marcus, sent this over twitter, but it'll probably get "buried" - Hotline Miami is a nice indie title to take a look at (if you haven't, of course). It has a "Dark Souls vibe" when it comes to the mechanics: lots of death as part of learning, some strategy, some quick-reaction button pressing, rewarding learning, and some non-invasive plot delivery. Of course, not in a fantasy setting, and a bit short, but I think it's entirely worth a try - for "research purposes", in the very least, if for nothing else. Has potential for lots of fun "fails" too. :)
