Every one of you

I was barely a bump in the grass, laying prone in my ghillie suit. Using my scoped hunting rifle to cover the exits of the school my compatriots had chased our prey in. Then there he was, driven outside onto the second floor balcony by a firefight within. I Lined his head in my crosshairs. A smooth pull of the trigger. Pop went the weasel.

That's what I would tell my hypothetical Grandchildren about the first poor soul I sniped in DayZ, but that wouldn't be telling the whole tale....

I'd be leaving out the parts where I was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ my pants, and constantly looking over my shoulder to see if anyone had been drawn by the cacophony of gunfire. When I did see the guy on the balcony, I frantically shouted over vent "Who's outside on the second floor? Is that one of you guys? Should I shoot???". I'll have you know I only had to be told 4 times that it wasn't them before I took the shot.

Skip ahead two days later. We find ourselves outside a city, pitch black night, full of zombies, and a major hub for players who take joy in shooting one another. Yes, we were there on purpose, and for the very same reason everyone else was. We had been doing well for ourselves, so I was a little cocky even while being warned that we probably would die.
I found myself in a bush, covering my teamates with my rifle as they shuffled forward through a field. Standard procedure, but I was getting bored and bold. I saw something climbing a ladder and before I really checked what it was, I shot it. Of course. Just a zombie. The report of my rifle was loud, and zombies move in on me from behind. This forced me from my great vantage point to move up to my team for help. They helped dispatch the zombies easily, but we created allot of noise in the process, and zombies are not the only thing drawn to gunfire. Less than 5 minutes after that one of us already lays dead, taking his killer with him. Instead of retreating, I checked the killers body, and decide to wait around there for my now respawned friend to come and pilfer the gear off his own corpse. Do I wait in cover? No. Do I move around a completely open field with my remaining pal in plain view? Oh sure. We'll be fine in this player infested town. No one is going to have heard the gunfight, and shoot us each in the backs as we casually jog through an open field. Right across from the obvious fly ridden carcasses of my dead friend and his assailant.

Should have stayed covering my team like I had done before.
Should have been looking over my shoulder.
Shouldn't have shot off like an excited puppy.
I can only blame myself. I guess sometimes being a little more paranoid can save lives.

Lesson learned.

This is a simulation. A simulated enviroment full of things who either want to eat you, or put a bullet between your eyes.
A zombie apocalypse prepper's dream game.
The best player isn't going to be the "COD god" who can kill four guys while swan diving into a room with doulbe pythons. No, the best players are going to be the thoughtful, cautious, and patient ones. Move tactically, take your time, and check the areas around your vehicles hiding spot BEFORE you log off. Be the hunter, but remember your are just as easily the prey. Of course there will always be that zombie who clips through a wall that you bring down with a fifth head shot, using the last bullet, in your second spent clip.

There's always something that can go out of control, but you make damn sure you have everything else under yours.
