Today marks the in-universe anniversary of the Cloverfield attack. The iconic cinematography, revolutionary ARG, and grounded take on the famous kaiju scenario served to be a game changer for kaiju films, and modern movies in general. Instead of featuring a star-studded cast of characters who knew everything about the monster and how to kill it, Cloverfield instead focused primarily on the survival of innocent lives (played by new, unfamiliar actors) caught in the crossfire during a giant monster attack, knowing NOTHING about the monster and having NO ties to the US government. In my opinion, Cloverfield was America's fresh and original take on the kaiju movie genre.
