to a game i love and wish i couldve played longer, for those whom patience is your friend the love will grow with your home. walking among the stone walls picking up carbon and crystals finding in each nook. only if i could experience it from the first minute again.

This game just wasn't my thing. I intend to play to the end of the 400 days but a lot of the time-based events lost my interest pretty quickly. I will say that I know a ton of people who would find the concept and themes of this game quite fascinating but I just wasn't one of those people.

I really enjoyed the concept and a lot about the game as far as how it's played and the slow build but unfortunately, I had some unrelated issues and had to put down the game for almost the whole year. When I came back, the end scene played and then I was unable to restart the game or try for another ending. I don't know if I have to uninstall and then reinstall the game but that's a lot to do just to be able to restart a game from the beginning. I wish this game had replay-ability in mind. I was only able to get 5 hours of playing in and it seems like it's going to make me work pretty hard to try to get any more in if it's even possible.

I feel like the Shadow

I would recommend this game, but not too heavily. It is a humbling experience, with many melancholic undertones that set a very depressing stage. At least at first. Then it becomes like a mobile idle game, to be checked in on once a day or so, until an ending can be achieved. The Shade is adorable in their sad, self-depricating little way, and the world feels just as desolate yet mysterious as the developer intended, but without patience to see it to the end, without the ability to remember it and stay with it, without the true drive to see the ending, I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone unless I'm certain they would take the time to see the game to the end, for little to no satisfying reward for doing so. Even to someone like myself that can appreciate the fact that the novelty and the journey in and of itself is the reward, it just felt meaningless toward the end. Not in a depressing or sad way, but in an empty and boring way. The "400 days in real time" and "you must wait for literally anything to happen" gimmick was foreboding and intimidating (and a little aggravating) at first, but it quickly faded into a nothingness once the player finds ways to speed up the time. Paintings, fireplaces, decor, and especially books made the game pass in a flash. Once everything was done, all there was left to do was let the shade read and then come back the next day to see the timer hit 0. 43 hours of playtime was even a little too long as it was, as I personally aimed to do everything I could before letting the game end. The timer hit 0 multiple times, and I used the hidden Lapiz Lazuli fire mechanic to rewind the clock more than once just because I refused to believe that a game with such a high and poetic opinion of itself was already over with by hour 20. In the end, I forgot about the game entirely, not having touched it for months until just now, when I reopened it just to finish it and write this review before uninstalling to reduce hard drive space, and I still had not done literally everything (I could have grinded for 100 coal to give to the wall-face just to earn every one of his musings, but I did not). In the end, I chose the "Wake the King" ending, not out of necessity, but simply because it was the most convenient. At this point in the game, I could have chosen any of the 5, but I was just ready to have it done with so that I didn't feel guilty about letting it sit on my desktop untouched for another 6 months. I see what the dev was going for, but again, once you find out how to speed things along (or if you know things in advance), it just doesn't hold your attention any longer. If you're going to play this game, do yourself a favor and do NOT look anything up about it beforehand, like I did. Not because it ruins the story, but because once you realize how little there is to do, it becomes depressingly shallow and empty.

TL:DR - Its a neat enough concept at first, but the novelty of it quickly fades, even to those of us with the most extreme patience. Play if you want, but don't spoil yourself. Not because there's anything worth spoiling, but because there really isn't; if you do, you'll be asking yourself "wow. is... is that really it...?"

There's something about this game, I find myself thinking about it a lot more than other, more "popular" games that I may even enjoy more. This game just sticks with you like that, and that's really really special. I think everyone should experience this game, its a lesson in a lot of things, but first and foremost a lesson in contemplative patience.
