New Features in Version 4.0

Our non-profit has released a free update of our popular video player app that includes renewed support for the latest widevine dependent services (like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime etc...) and supports several new features. Most notably, the player window can now be easily resized in a corner of the screen:

This feature still supports full opacity control. We have upgraded dependencies to support the latest versions of chromium and electron so streaming services continue to work smoothly. We have also enabled hardware acceleration that should help performance, especially on legacy devices. A number of small bugs have been addressed, like one where some keystrokes were being captured in the background and preventing default behavior, as well as some memory leaks.

Finally, the app now supports apple silicon, although because of the way widevine requires signing apps, it can not be built universally. We are reaching out to steam to determine whether there is a way to upload a separate arm build for apple silicon, but in the meantime, the ARM build can be downloaded on out non-profit's website here[www.cinqmarsmedia.com].

Chameleon continues to be free and open source through our tech and education non-profit, and we rely on the generosity of donors to keep these projects going. Netflix, Hulu & All Your Favorite Streaming Services Now Supported!

I had long since given up any hope of getting word back from Widevine, certified letters led to spotty email exchanges and a lot, a LOT of waiting around for 2+ years, but a few weeks ago it finally happened! Widevine signed our app which spurred us to patch a number of bugs, redesign the UI to be more user friendly, and build a comprehensive and easy to understand user manual[www.cinqmarsmedia.com]. Coincidently (or not? 🤔) we got the good news literally the day after our announcement that we would be providing Chameleon for free as donation-ware since we felt so aggrieved that our promise of streaming support to our users had gone unfulfilled for so long. We're honestly just excited to finally bring you this feature that we always felt was so integral to this utility. The update is live NOW.

I have always had a personal affinity for this application, - I built it for myself and used it for years before realizing others might find value in it (I use it mostly to experience online coursers while multitasking, coursera and edX). I considered it a tremendous failure that, mostly due to limitations with widevine, we could actualize my initial vision for it. I'm so happy to say that at long last, this new build is reminiscent of that vision.

This new version is donation ware, the free version requires 15 seconds of waiting at startup if you have not purchased or donated to our non-profit in the past. We're doing a lot of cool and useful stuff[www.cinqmarsmedia.com] and your donations help us continue with that work.

If you have purchased the app in the past, things should work just fine, bypassing the donation prompt - otherwise just enter your email to permanently skip it. You are also entitled to steam keys for our other games, so please reach out to info@cinqmarsmedia.com for those if you have not already done so.

Finally, Chameleon is fully open source but the code needs to be sanitized a bit before being made public, I will get to that ASAP.

Chameleon Video Player is Now Free!

Thank you to everyone who has supported this software. I honestly love Chameleon, and use it daily. It's a pleasure to code and work while absorbing a YouTube video or file in the background. That being said, it was obvious from the beginning that the biggest utility for most people would be using Netflix, Hulu or other paid subscription services and as I've explained in posts before, that isn't possible without the support of Google Widevine. We have done everything in our power to appeal to them, but to no avail. For that reason, and the fact that we have not met our own expectations with updates, that we feel it's no longer appropriate to ask for a donation to our non-profit for use of the software. From now on the project will be 100% free to use as well as continue to be open-source. There is an overdue update slated for next week where users can put in a custom URL, including localhost domains. For everyone who paid for the software in the past, we are offering free keys of The Devil's Calculator, Synonymy AND our upcoming paid game (which we are really excited about). Thank you for all your support and I hope this move encourages more people to use this awesome little utility.
