This one is huge for translations! So far, the community has made a Russian translation, and several people have started on a few other languages. But these were all the easy languages for me to add support for. All I had to do was add in the Russian alphabet and all the accented Latin letters to my pixel fonts. This wasn't too much work for me.

The real problems started when someone wanted to try translating everything into Chinese. There was no way I could make all the Chinese glyphs myself. So I had to implement a way for a Chinese font to be loaded in. The real problem starts when you realize that there are A LOT of Chinese glyphs. Without getting too deep into the programming side, this basically caused the game to lag just by scrolling through the collection menu. I had to go through the collection and most of the events and scenes in the whole game to optimize the way all the text was being drawn on screen. After all this work, the game will be able to support most languages now! Japanese and Korean are other examples of languages that can now be done by loading in fonts. This was a ton of work, so let's hope it ends up paying off!

Keep in mind, these are essentially community mods for now. No language will be officially supported until the game is done, because I am still writing, changing text, and updating the game so frequently. The new event is automatically unlocked, but it is exclusive to The Towers mode! There has been a change of plans for it's design. Initially, the plan was to create a single event that was similar to a bonding time event. It would serve multiple functions and have the complexity of Voltage Veyeral's event. Instead of that, I have decided to split that idea into several smaller events. This way, there can be multiple shorter events for The Towers instead of only a single one you would run into on almost every run.

I'll split up the events for other modes now that the tower one is divided into a bunch of smaller ones. The event for endless mode will be a simple one that will introduce shiny battles to the monster choices if you meet certain conditions.

-The latest version of GameMaker introduced too many audio bugs, so I reverted it for this build

Surprise early update!
Two game crashes were found, and I don't like letting any known crashes live for too long, so I moved this update up by a week. I'm aiming for July 19th for a proper version 8.10.

v8.9c - July 6th, 2024

-Improved the performance of the change log screen which was starting to lag from the sheer weight of all the text

So how many gifts did I finish this week? Unfortunately, none. I spent most of the week optimizing my work on Keylocker, but I did pick up a few techniques for my own game! The work never ends...

-Made several changes for optimizing how graphics are drawn. This may improve performance in battles with certain backgrounds.

A problem that I've run into a few times is the limited amount of space in the text box that holds all the gift effects. (This is not about the card itself, but the big box with more descriptions you can find in the collection and various other places.) This is especially a problem with many of the burdens that have all sorts of unique and longer to explain effects. It got even worse when it was brought to my attention that some words are just WAY longer in other languages! So, I finally made that text box scrollable!

This was really REALLY hard to do, and I had to make it work in several different menus that all function a little differently, so I didn't have time to finish a bigger piece of content this time. But these are the rare times where I can actually focus on a batch of new gifts. I have 17 new Blessings and Burdens for you! The blessings are related to the main 3 shot types that didn't have enough gifts dedicated to them in The Towers mode before.

All the new burdens have relatively low stake effects, and they must be unlocked first. It might seem strange to want to unlock burdens, but I'll only do this with weak effects that you'd probably prefer over most of the other ones. There won't be too many more of these, and the total amount of burdens will end up lower than the total blessings.

• When checking a gift's detailed effects list, it is now possible to scroll through the text if it does not fit on one page. This took a really long time to do, so you have to find a gift like this and scroll through all the text while complimenting it!

• Bug Fix: After a battle, the particles created by your heart would continue to spawn off-screen potentially crashing the game if you stay on the result screen for a few hours

I'll skip the "upcoming list" section since nothing on it was finished this time. I do want to finish a few more gifts that I have planned, so I'm going to drop as many as I can in 1 week on June 28th!

I often think about how there are certain monsters that only a tiny fraction of players will ever see. Most players will never go far enough into the unlocking chain to reach this new battle. But part of the whole appeal for me is to make it feel like the unlocks are endless and unique. Even though making a game be truly endless is not actually possible, I am proud of just how long you can keep going while finding new and unique designs. Even though only a small fraction of you will ever see it, it was worth all those hours of work on this battle just for the few of you that find it!

-Improved the transitions of the new alternate music intros into the main tracks
-Bug Fix: Attempting to access the Language menu anywhere other than the title screen would softlock the game
-Bug Fix: In a Lv3 battle with Nova, Emerald's return had a longer than intended delay before attacking

This patch adds support for community translations. Russian language was already done by a few brave enough to tackle the tens of thousands of words! But due to the frequency of my updates, no language other than English will be officially supported until the whole game is done. Since the translations are done by the community for now, they will always have to translate changes and new text after each update is live. Case in point, even this small patch needs the translators to add text from new menu options before it becomes usable.

For now, if you would like to try the Russian language, or if you would like to attempt a different translation, you will have to look in the game's official discord. (The link is in a pinned forum post) Although, it should be noted that Japanese, Chinese, and any other language that will require a different font is not yet supported, but soon.

The other big thing in this patch is that most battle songs have a new alternative starting point. If you hear a song again in the same run, it will have a new intro that leads to some point in the middle of the song! Probably some parts you didn't get to hear often before! Each song will alternate intros every time you hear it within the same run.

-Bug Fix: While paused, entering the check monster dreams menu would potentially softlock the game if you had low frame rates

Now that my other work on Keylocker is (mostly) done, I can set a date for v8.8 on May 24th!
EDIT: Looks like I need to make this May 31st instead. Lot's of last minute work had to be done!
