I just started playing this game, so do I have to complete the recollections chapter, or do I go into the character creator straight away?

Is anyone having trouble running the game? I just started the story mode and the beginning fight with Yamori lags so much I couldn't be bothered to continue fighting him. I've lowered the resolution, lowered just about everything to do with the graphics and I know my PC can run the game so I'm running out of ideas....
