So I guess the limit of fun and easy ends there since the merchants disappears completely, even if you could survive for a bit longer it's gonna be too hard without the trading element. Rubber Essentially piles up too much like Plastic, you need constant Metal,Steel, Gunpowder and Fabrics with some wood to keep the run going indefinitely....
