Long-time Duke3D fan, but this game is trash. Both the 1996 Atomic and 2013 Megaton editions were far better. They could have repackaged the Megaton edition without the licensing issues and just focus on the 5th episode plus more dev commentaries on the classic episodes.

I’d only suggest this game for newcomers who’d like to try Duke3D via Steam and fans interested in the new content, but with these caveats:
1. Buy when on sale for <$2. It’s frequently on sale and not worth more than 2 bucks.
2. Load game through EDuke32 (might need "Stopgap Compatibility Layer" plugin).
3. Set it up with the 1996 Duke voice, except for the new lines in episode 5.

Pros:
1. New episode 5 made by a few of the original devs. It's alright. Has larger maps, more enemies, but that’s about it.
2. Some of Lee Jackson’s new music is alright, but mostly meh.
3. Some of the classic levels have commentaries with good insight for fans

Cons:
1. Jon St. John’s re-recordings of Duke’s voice are comically bad.
2. The new 3D engine was a waste of dev resources. They didn’t have to make breaking changes to the engine, because Eduke32 with mods was superior. The lighting is too dark even at max brightness, mouse movement sucks, and no effort was made to increase texture resolutions or billboarding frames.
3. Very few dev commentaries on very few classic levels and a lot of useless commentaries on the new 5th episode.
4. Episode 5 was a bit sloppy and lazy. Maps are often one-way: you may finish a map and miss some secrets, but you can't go back because they didn't add a teleporter or ladder in a key spot like they used to. There are a lot of recycled assets; 1 new enemy, 1 new boss, 1 new gun, and few new low res textures. Also, the final boss is a joke. WTF.
5. Missed opportunity in adding a dedicated server search similar to Half-Life. Would have helped foster an online Duke3D community.

I swear there's a correlation between the direction of wind and whether or not your controller will be detected.

I preferred the audio from the original version (still available from ZOOM Platform, by the way), particularly running SC-55 MIDIs through EDuke32. And the "graphical improvements" here kinda just washed over me. AND I encountered some minor issues with "use" being finnicky about placement in front of certain objects.

But it's Duke 3d, and it's all good fun. Plus, Episode 5 is a really nice addition, with great environmental variety, level design and some new enemies and weapons to boot. On Come Get Some difficulty there were plenty of nice challenges here.

Getting all achievements is a cakewalk; even I managed to do it and I'm rubbish.
