I played Dead Rising 2 Off the Record when it came out on the xbox 360 but never played the original. After the deluxe remaster came out i wanted to play the original so I picked this version up. After completing this and comparing it to the deluxe remaster, I wish I would have played the deluxe remaster instead.
This is still a very solid game and is unfiltered unlike the remaster, but there are some balancing issues that were fixed in the remaster. AI for survivors that follow you is laughably bad and the small chainsaw is so powerful you are almost forced to use it. This is not fun because it locks you out of having to use other weapons in your surroundings, which is kind of the point of setting this game in a shopping mall. The remaster nerfs the small chainsaw and makes other weapons more powerful, encouraging use of a diverse arsenal of weapons. Also the remaster makes the game more accessible, not necessarily easier. For example, in psychopath fights(the boss fights) you can kill a boss in seconds with the small chainsaw(or any weapon) by stunlocking them. This stops you from seeing all the work the developers put into these fights(and most have a really cool licensed song during the fight). The deluxe remaster makes it so only your first hit in a series of attacks does full damage. This is good because it prevents you from rushing a boss and stunlocking them, you get to experience the intended battle and are forced to engage with your surroundings and the game mechanics. This is a feature that was introduced in DR2:OTR because it stopped boss battles from being shorter than the cutscenes that introduced them. My last point will be that there are several interactions in this game that are not voice acted. This coupled with the poor AI can make NPC's frustrating to deal with. In the remaster, everything has decent to great voice acting and radio calls don't get in the way of gameplay. The AI teammates can actually carry their own weight or at least follow you back to base correctly, and that will be the majority of your gameplay in dead rising.
Overall, a really great game with a unique time mechanic and zombie hordes in an Americana mall setting that feels like an early Xbox360 game, because it is. If you have somehow not played any of these games, definitely start with this one and play the deluxe remaster version if you can. Afterwards play 2 or 2 Off the Record if you need more Frank West, he's covered wars you know!

The kind of game you play when you just want to goof around.

This is one of those games that your enjoyment will highly depend on what you already know about the game. Where survivors are, what books do what, how to kill the bosses, where weapons are - it is all beneficial knowing these things before attempting to play through.

It is very video gamey and I love it. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and is all around just satisfying to play. It offers a somewhat unique experience too as I can't really think of another game where you are trapped in a zombie apocalypse under a time limit and you can take photos of various things that grant you experience.

It's not really like Resident Evil as those games are typically get from A to B as fast as possible. This is more just survive. While there is a story, you are free to not engage with it at all and just look out for yourself.

It's methodical, arcade-y, goofy, and just fun. I highly recommend this game if you feel like giving yourself a puzzle to solve or just looking to kill some free time by wacking some zombies with a bunch of random objects.

Buy this version, you get the best Frank West. He's covered wars you know.

You can kill a zombie with a purse wearing children's clothing and a Lego mask. Also there's the US military.

Easily one of the best designed open-world sandbox games due to multiple playthroughs making you plan out the best routes. Game has good story to uncover, has fun weapons to play with. It may be jank, but it's such a classic.
