Windows 11 Compatibility Bug Fix — March 2025

What changed:

The latest update fixes a common 'flickering screen' problem on newer Windows 11 computers.
We have seen your comments and workarounds on the message boards and worked to resolve this issue for everyone.

We're so happy that these games continue to bring joy on hardware so far ahead of the time these stories were written!

Potential bug:

In some cases, drivers have been out of date. We recommend updating your drivers. You can find instructions for doing so here: https://www.herinteractive.com/2014/04/graphics-problems/

If this doesn't help, we suggest deleting the d3d9.dll file from the game folder, then launching the game again. You can find the game folder by clicking the gear icon on the game's page in your steam library and selecting manage > browse local files. This will put you in a position previous to this update. We apologize for any inconvenience the update may have caused.

Nancy Drew: Trail of the Twister

Unplayable, Error 5:0000065435

Just bought this game off of the Summer Steam sale as a test for other Nancy Drew games (I have a Mac, so I bought one of the Mac-compatible games). But every time I try to load it, I get Error 5:0000065435 and the game won't load-- whether I try to do it from the Steam page or the game file on my hard drive, whether I'm online with Steam or off. Basically, the game is unplayable and the purchase was wasted. Anyone have any ideas? Does Steam issue refunds when game don't work?...

Glitchy dialog scenes

Screen keeps flashing and flickering while trying to talk to anyone. it also happens if I open my bag, try to save, or take pictures with Frosty. any ideas?

Wow this game was truly awful

As a long enduring fan of the Nancy Drew PC games, I was SEVERELY disappointed in this title. I haven't played a game since the series started going downhill at Secret of the Old Clock and so I thought I'd pick this up on Steam. I can't even explain all of the things wrong with this game because it would take all day. It was just utterly boring, unengaging, and annoying. It's really such a shame to see such an excellent series come to this....

In Pa' and Ma's shop their is a box that costs 99 dollars, has anyone opened it? Also I'm trying to raise enough money to buy it and see what's inside, but it's taking a long time, is there a way to earn pennies rapidly? So far I only get money from Land Rush and the circuits in the barn...

A Fix for Mac users

Hey all! So I got Shadow at the Water's edge and I've been emailing Steam since December. I got a response the other day that actually worked. I'm pretty sure all Nancy Drew games are having the same issue so it should work for you as well. Here's what you should do: Go to the game in your Steam library, right click the game and click properties. Next go to Betas. Then in the box where you can type stuff copy and paste this --> ThwEDgb5rfFw That unlocks a certain beta thing just for this error code. ...
