Mega Man is a series that is extremely dear to me. I think it's hard to really put into words the depths of my admiration for the Classic series in particular. At launch, I think the Legacy Collection was a very solid release, and a good way to play these games. The extra challenges are fun, though the Gold Medal time requirements for many of the challenges definitely point to them being made for hardcore fans of the Blue Bomber rather than casual players. Around the time the collection was released on Switch, every other version of the collection (sans the 3DS) was updated to include features to overclock the emulated NES in order to remove slowdown, as well as a rewind feature, which I think pushes this release above and beyond.

I think everyone of these games is an absolute classic, and well-worth the time of anyone who enjoys platformers, The biggest critique against this collection when it came out, as I recall, was it being compared to the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, released for the franchise's 15th Anniversary back in 2002 for the PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube. The main reason for that being that the Anniversary Collection included Mega Man 7 and 8, as well as Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, two previously arcade exclusive spin-offs that essentially acted as boss rush games. It's generally agreed nowadays that the Legacy Collection is a superior release, though I want to discuss why.

While I do hold the Anniversary Collection in higher regard than some (I was introduced to the classic series by it and still boot it up on my PS2 from time to time), I think it's worth noting that that said collection did have quite a few issues.
Mega Man 7's credit sequence is played over a pure black screen, due to issues with the hardware of the time emulating the Mode 7 effects of the SNES properly. MM7's credit sequence has a rather striking visual that feels like a part of the game's identity, and having it lost is something of a disappointment. In MM8's case, the game suffers from poor audio mixing across the board. Their omission here is kind of a moot point with Legacy Collection 2 including them as well as 9 and 10, but that is a separate release from the one I'm reviewing here, so it's not really worth noting.

The biggest thing that the Anniversary Collection has that I think is not a zero-sum better/worse situation over the Legacy Collection, is that the versions of Mega Man 1-6 on the earlier collection are slightly stripped down versions of the Rockman Complete Works series. The Complete Works series were PS1 rereleases of Mega Man 1-6 with a slew of extra features. Easy mode, remixed music, and a few other things. The biggest feature that I think still keeps that version worth a look for the more casual Mega Man fan is quick weapon switching. As in the post NES Mega Man titles, the player can cycle through weapons with the L1/LB and R1/RB buttons.

This does genuinely have an effect on how I play the game, and from what I've heard, it does the same for many other players. Not having to pause to switch weapons makes experimenting with weapons feel more natural, and it's hard to deny that the lack of it is noticed in the Legacy Collection as someone who's played these games in virtually every way available (including the shoddy android ports).

However, these versions aren't 100% faithful to the NES versions outside of this. There are minor bugs that exist in these versions, and rather than port over the English NES titlescreens to the Complete Works versions for the Anniversary collection, they created new, extremely basic title screens for these versions. Mega Man 2 also lacks the 'Normal' Difficulty added in the NES release (The Famicom original only had one difficulty, and its equivalent to the NES 'Difficult' setting), though it, like the other games, have a new Easy difficulty.

This I think is the biggest point in the Legacy Collection's favor. The core games on offer are 100% faithful to the NES versions, including the odd bit of graphical corruption in Mega Man 3's Stage Select screen, just with the option to mitigate slowdown. In short, they are the best way to play the NES games officially, and in many ways, equal to what you can get with unofficial emulation for most of these games. The one exception to that is MM1, which has a fantastic Mesen HD pack. I wouldn't call that specifically superior, but it is something that this version of course lacks. But being able to overclock the virtual CPU along with the other standard emulation features of save states and rewind, put this collection on par with most unofficial emulation efforts, and I think that deserves to be applauded.

If you want the 8-bit Mega Man games from the Nintendo Entertainment System era in a highly faithful bundle, surely this collection is for you.

Mostly re-created to near-perfection, including the glitches and exploits that worked decades ago with the true original 8-bit Mega Man games, this collection is definitely for hardcore Mega Man fans and players.

If you're new to Mega Man 8-bit titles, I would warn that this series of games helped coin the old phrase "Nintendo Hard". . . it means to hold a frustrating level of difficulty that at times demands near-flawless skills and that punishes failure in various ways.

The bottom line: definitely worth purchasing if you can and have the space for it, for new and old players alike!

Tl;dr - The Mega Man games deserve props for pioneering a major IP of early times, but unfortunate design flaws prevent them from being recommendable from me.

A Really Fun collection game to play. I love Megaman and I used to play I think Megaman X in the DS and I swear Capcom is just the Goated Company.
