Life is Strange is a point and click adventure game with a captivating narrative and rich character development. We play as Max Caufield, an arts student who has returned to her hometown of Arcadia, after having been gone for several years. She reunites with her childhood friend Chloe Price, and saves her from a violent incident. This coincides with her discovery of a powerful ability; time manipulation. Strange things begin to stir in Arcadia and Max must untangle a mystery. The time travel ability really creates an interesting dynamic in the game and we use it frequently to solve puzzles and change the outcome of events. There are many decisions that have to be made as the story progresses, and even the smallest choice can have big consequences. The story has different paths and endings depending on our choices, and is an emotional ride with deep attachments to the characters. There is a substantial emphasis on themes of grief, loss and friendship. Visually the game is beautiful with an impressive art style and artistic character models. The music really complements the story and the voice acting is outstanding. There is the occasional angsty and cringy dialogue during some scenes. Life is Strange is one of the best narrative driven games I've played and is a standout title.

Life is Strange captivated me from the very first moment I played. The game isn’t just about making choices—it’s about living with them, feeling the weight of every decision, and often grappling with conflicted emotions. It’s raw, real, and full of moments that made me laugh, cry, and question everything.

What really stood out for me was how much I learned about the characters through their personal spaces. Exploring their houses or rooms wasn’t just about collecting clues—it was about understanding who they are at their core. Each little detail, from photographs to scribbled notes, added depth to their stories and made me feel closer to them. I wasn’t just playing a game; I was discovering the lives of these characters, and that made every moment feel meaningful.

The story itself is both heart-wrenching and thought-provoking, tackling themes of friendship, loss, and the consequences of our actions. Time travel offers a sense of control, but it also raises difficult questions about fate and free will. In the end, Life is Strange is a beautifully crafted, emotional experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. It’s a game that makes you think, feel, and reflect—something I truly appreciated.

how can a game make you feel this way

My first impression of the game was how artistic it looked. The game had a clear art direction, and it was pretty indicative from the get go. It is something I appreciate, as much as I appreciate any games that do not shy away from their art direction.

For the first 20 – 30 minutes of the game, nothing really hooked my interest. The game tried with its introduction, but it used a familiar trope used in many story-rich games. However, sometime in the story, the game revealed its core mechanic which tied closely into its story (rather to its genre: ‘Choices Matter’). It is a mechanic that I haven’t really seen used before, and the developer masterfully weaved it into a story-telling tool. One that can only be achieved by video games. I am hooked completely.

I think Life is Strange was ahead of its time. While it is more common for game today to tackle sensitive issues, I don’t think this was the case back in 2015 (maybe I’m wrong? Feel free to fact check me). It is these sensitive issues that add a lot of depth to the concept of ‘changing a fate’. It truly left you wondering what sort of things you’d do if you do hold such power. I pondered a lot after I finished a game, but this one struck me in the middle of my play through. Psychologically, the concept introduced by Life is Strange is so intriguing that I started to question the nature of choices and life. By Episode 2, I was left wanting more.

Sometime in the middle of the play through, I felt that some scene were written without much purpose. I thought that it was only inserted to highlight the core mechanic of the game. And to some extent, I felt that it was gratuitous. However, I really didn’t expect for the game to throw a curve ball at me. As I completed the entire play through, I realised that no scene in this game served no purpose. I think that was the reason why this game is so loved by many. There were so many layers in its story, each written in an intricate details. Those very details and compelling characters were what made this game very relatable.

One of the best story-rich games out there. And most definitely, the best game where choices truly mattered.
