I hope you’re having an amazing Cooking Fest! During this delicious time, we want to present to your devlog #5 - 🎨 Visuals & Animation ✨

Our animator has provided SO MANY sneak peeks into her process… and now we can share them with you 🎉

Let’s start at the beginning 👇

Cook For Love takes place in the same universe as Tell Me Your Story - which is also where the game’s art comes from. These two games have their vibrant colors and soft style in common, as well as a few characters and their designs.
Cook For Love’s kitchen elements, such as the fridge, gas stove, and oven, have been drawn in parts. Each detail of these appliances was referenced, made separately, and then put together to create something that a real cook could use.

Meanwhile the game’s characters had two different stages of being put together. The first one was when the first few characters were created - Sofia and Maria included. Their designs have stayed since the pre-playtest version and their role in Clement’s life only grew.
After our playtesters’ feedback (you’re the best ✨) the team focused on adding a deeper narrative - and together with it quite a few characters. The second wave of character designs came by - this time it included many more residents of Paris.

Here comes the second part of the devlog - Animation 🎥
Our animator - Karolina "lirei" Wójt - has created the entirety of Cook For Love’s intro from the storyboard to the full-fledged animated version.
Chefs, if you don’t dabble in animation (like me, Peanut 🐾) you might be thinking - what came first, the sound or the video? In Cook For Love’s case, the animation was created first. Below you can check out the storyboards and the notes for every important scene.
Fun fact: the scene with Grandpa Clement wasn’t there from the very beginning - which is why it's circled in blue!

The animated intro’s kitchen was drawn based on the already-made assets so it looks very similar to the one Clement uses in-game.

Some parts of the intro had to be referenced - like cutting a banana and cracking an egg. Getting the perfect egg split must’ve been a challenge! The real-life recordings of those two scenes were turned into some of the most dynamic parts of the animation.
While talking with yours truly, Karolina mentioned that her favorite scenes were the ones she could polish to her heart’s desire - like the short conversation between Clement and Jean-Luc. That and the pancake flip were the most time-consuming to make, as every element could be made more organic and life-like.
Those scene transitions look so tasty, too!

Peanut here with devlog #4 - 👨‍🍳 Cooking with the team 🍲 - where we’ll explore the practical side of prepping food together with the developers. We asked them about their favorite recipes, flavors, and how they’ve learned to cook - everyone starts somewhere, just like Clement!

We also have a few news and links at the end of the devlog 👀 so without further ado!

Let’s start with favorite dishes and flavors. Some of them you can see in the game, others are from personal cookbooks or recipe sites.

Inez "Neska" Górska Brzezińska – Game Designer and Producer
“On cold, windy, chilly evenings, I love to cook up a big pot of tomato soup for my family. Then we eat it for a week, and it never gets old. (...) Out of everything, I have the lowest tolerance for sweetness. I can get overwhelmed by sugar very quickly, and instead of pastries, I'm a fan of hearty, protein-rich snacks.”

“I’ve always liked sweet flavors, so anything dessert-related is a win - especially if it’s healthy too. In real life, I’m fond of high-protein desserts, and in the game, my favorites are carrot cake and strawberry shake - I’d love to try them in real life.”

Paulina Czapla – Developer
“I like salty snacks the most, but I can't ignore pastries either. However, I'm not a big fan of overly sweet snacks and chocolate, so I usually avoid heavily chocolatey sweets, preferring the more fruity ones. If I had to choose which of the game's recipes I would most like to try, it would be pasta bolognese and strawberry cake. Strawberry cake appears regularly as a birthday cake in my family and is one of my favorite desserts.”

We’re all fans of good food, and our devs have made the perfect mixture of sweet and salty, as well as simple and complicated recipes. In the beginning, every cook will learn and perfect some simple recipes - like banana milk or tomato cream.
At the end of the game, you will have access to pizzas, pasta, whole dinner dishes, and even cakes. These are the baby steps to culinary glory 😌👨‍🍳

Everyone’s cooking skills are evolving, and this is how our devs practice their own 🍳🤺

“Since I was a child, I learned to cook by watching my grandmother and grandfather. Grandmother taught me soups, and Grandfather showed me cakes, all by heart. They taught me how to handle ingredients and which flavors go well together, all without recipes. We cooked by feel, without precise measurements. My grandmother would show me the desired outcome, but I was free to choose the elements along the way. For example, as a child, I would add corn and thyme croutons to my tomato soup.”

Kamila “KamFox” Osińska – 2D Artist
“I cook a lot and I love trying out new recipes I find on the internet or in cookbooks. I almost always stick to the recipe, and I try to do that as precisely as possible, unless I prepare a certain recipe so many times, that I want to experiment with switching up the ingredients. I usually make a big mess in the kitchen, but it's part of the process :)”

“When it comes to my own cooking, I focus more on nutrition and quick preparation rather than taste, though I try to make it both healthy and tasty. I learned from making simple student meals and usually cook by feel, rarely sticking to recipes. When trying something new, I start with a recipe but often end up improvising halfway through, which doesn’t always go well. I still have a lot to learn!”

Paulina Czapla – Developer
“When it comes to cooking on my own, I try my hand at simple and quick dishes. I have a set of meals that I make often, but from time to time, especially on weekends, I try new things. I was taught to cook by my mother and the Internet. I usually precisely follow the instructions given in the recipe and only after I gain experience with a certain dish I start to experiment.”

Whether you cook according to vibes or recipes, as long as you practice you will get better - we’ve all burnt something before!

Cook For Love has an official release date! 21st of November is the date! 🎉🎉

On top of that, we're taking part in Steam Next Fest - we have a demo ready to go for anyone who’d like to check out the basics of prepping homey dishes 😤🥗

We’re still working on the post-playtest feedback but we're also setting up a stream so you can already see big changes coming to the narrative side of the game!

To start off, let me introduce you to some of our new characters: Anna, Henri, and Hugo. They’re a family of three that will visit the little restaurant. As many families do, Hugo’s parents are struggling with something - their son is a bit of a fussy eater.
Maria and Sofia, who you can meet during the playtest, also have their own stories, problems… and favorite snacks.
Many more people will appear in Cook For Love, and all will taste (and talk about!) the dishes you prepare. Are you ready to make someone’s life so much sweeter?

There are changes coming to the restaurant itself – like a look into the dining area where the clientele will sit. We currently have a work-in-progress version of the outside of the restaurant building – take a peek!

More UI changes are coming, which include a new, more delicious recipe presentation. You’ll be able to feast not only on the end product but also on the pictures in the recipe book (as many do when they cook).

This will mean that we’re going to talk about Clement’s cooking adventures, as well as his to-be wife and the universe of Tell Me Your Story.

At the end of the devlog there will be some information about upcoming changes in Cook For Love based on your playtest feedback 🎮 Thank you so much for everyone who has given their feedback! If anyone else wants to take part in the playtest – come on in!

Let’s start with Clement’s cooking adventure. What happened in his life before he met Rose on the Orient Express? Was he fated to be a masterful cook?

Well, he actually ended up in Jean-Luc Chatillon’s restaurant because of a newspaper ad. He did not have much confidence in his skills, and in the end, he was left to care for the restaurant’s kitchen alone… with Jean-Luc’s recipe book as his only guide.

Well, the master chef believed that “time is the best teacher” and that the first person who answered his newspaper ad would be the right one. Clement does turn out to be the perfect candidate, and with the help of kind neighbors, he’s able to climb to the top.

Cook For Love and its predecessor – Tell Me Your Story have more in common than Clement’s character. Players of TMYS got glimpses of our amateur cook in the Orient Express chapter of the story and will easily recognize the cozy art style. Besides shared aesthetics and characters, there are also mechanics that the two games share. The fans of our puzzle game will definitely be familiar with some in-game controls and environment interactions.

The familiar UI was reshaped to include new functions and additional recipe-related instructions.

The recipes in Cook For Love are quite simple even if their difficulty ramps up with each new cooking level that Clement achieves. From smoothies and dinners to cakes and pizzas – these dishes are there to promote a healthy approach to eating and ease players into the world of cooking. Many meals can be made from easily accessible ingredients and balance out the diet of anyone who’d like to spend some time on home-cooked meals.
After his cooking adventures and meeting Rose during his Orient Express days, Clement settles down. That doesn’t mean he’s not a busy man! He has a creative and curious granddaughter to spend time with and plenty of adventures that she’d like to know.
For those cooking fans who like puzzles just as much as food, Tell Me Your Story will give more context as to how Clement and Rose met, as well as who is his adventurous other half. All is shown through the eyes of Amelia – their granddaughter.

Lovers of puzzle games have already recognized the style of Tell Me Your Story – the previous game from our dev team. Though related via their shared universe and characters, Cook For Love can be played without any knowledge of Tell Me Your Story’s plot. Built upon the same art and cozy vibes as TMYS, Cook For Love puts a culinary spin and takes some of the most enjoyable aspects of food-related puzzles to a new level. Of cooking, that is 🍲

Drawing the cozy essence from Tell Me Your Story was key to making a style-coherent game that would continue the theme of stress-free puzzles - though the gameplay is a lot different. The cooking part is much more free and straightforward with a recipe ready for whenever you need a hint.

Cook For Love was inspired by Cooking Mama (ah the art of cooking 🍝), A Little to the Left (as its predecessor 🧩), and Overcooked, but without elements related to time pressure.

Many of the above titles are already known to cooking (and puzzle) game enthusiasts, so Cook For Love is meant to ease the players into a cozy atmosphere while drawing on those concepts.

One of the main focuses was also the delicious presentation of all the dishes 😋 There will be a separate devlog that will say more about the dish choice and different, cooking-related topics that had an impact on the game’s process.
