I'm a bit mixed about it. The characters felt quite authentic to me, and it was interesting reading what they thought before and after the war. While it was refreshing to see different perspectives, I felt the game was a bit dishonest when it showed how terrible the route of the island losing was. Not to say that it would be too unrealistic or something, but it was so grim as to really make all views that weren't patriotic out as wrong. In the route of the island winning, there was still doubt wether things might have been better otherwise, but the game seems to take a stance that it definitely wouldn't be, which I thought was a shame. It seemed like the message went from something I interpreted as "Even if some people suffer less or more than others, in general, war is always bad." to "War is bad, but losing is a lot worse."
