Twelve button match the shape puzzle

Are you supposed to choose 4 shapes (since it resets only after 4 buttons are pushed) to create a figure that matches something demonstrated on the pillar/stalagmite where you found the configuration to open the door to this puzzle? That was my interpretation from the so-called hint. If so, the directions of the shapes on the buttons do not match the orientation of the shapes on the pillar. Move from hint

I am new to these types of games (using keyboard instead of mouse). When I approach a puzzle, how do I move away from it? Even if I use a hint and want to come back later, not sure how I move back from the clue.
