Got to sit down and play some Void Sols for a few-ish hours. It's a minimalistic, top-down souls-like that has a banger aesthetic (check out the store page).

The combat is really good for being a top-down style, several weapons already (and secondaries), and I just unlocked the scythe which is by far my favorite weapon. The hardest part about combat is the telegraphing of enemy attack due to perspective, and at least early on multiple enemies are quite hard to deal with. They did well with enemy variety, imo. Enemies have distinct attack patterns, like attacking in 3s, doing either melee or ranged attacks, dash style attacks, etc. Some beefier tank or mage archtypes as well.

Map-wise it's not really linear, and for each new area you don't have a map until you've had the change to explore blind for at least ~50% of it, which I think is a great mix between having a map and having none at all. To unlock new biomes you generally have to complete the previous one(s) (as I said it's somewhat linear but I was given multiple options at the start to explore, and now I have keys to areas I don't know exist yet).I already encountered several distinct biomes (Mines and Frozen Mountains were my personal standouts so far).

Stats are similar to other games: Strength, Vitality, Speed, and Dexterity. They all affect either total stamina, health, damage (different weapon archetypes benefit from different stats). There's artifacts and different health potion buffs, too.

Those familiar with souls-likes might enjoy this change of pace from the traditional 3D view. I came for the art style, and keep playing for .. well ... the art style, but also the combat and mystery of unlocking the next map. Each biome took me around either 30 - 45 minutes to fully explore (items are visible on the map regardless of if you have the map unlocked, it's just a black screen otherwise). Some areas have bosses, some don't.
