Content Update: New Level (Subzero Slaughter) & Parry mechanic

Hey Shredders we're back with a new update to fix previous issues and bring you tons of new content! We have a new level that will provide the biggest challenge yet in Shred Off history and for you to conquer the leaderboards on a new level!

Here’s what’s new in version 1.2

Patch Highlights:

NEW

• New level: Subzero Slaughter!!
• More Achievements!!

Pacifist: Finish a level without shooting a weapon.
One Small Step for Shredder: Get 4 seconds of airtime.
S rank achievement for Subzero Slaughter

• Added a splash screen
• Added music to the main menu
• You can now dodge and deflect enemy projectiles by doing tricks.
• Voice acting for the player, enemies, and a new announcer

UPDATED

• Truuli Peak & Dark Aurora now has guaranteed pick-ups, you can strategize your run or be daring and go for randomized pick-up boxes if you’re feeling lucky...
• New soundtrack for the main menu.
• Several tutorial missions were updated and simplified. New tutorial missions were added.

Gameplay Changes:

Enemies

• The Molotov chucker and gunner enemies are now bigger and wear orange jackets to show their allegiance to “Bad Taste & Standing Out” gang.

Bugfixes & QoL Changes:

QoL Changes:

• Settings are saved switching between levels when applied.
• The timer now gets paused while respawning when going out of bounds.
• Added text to out-of-bounds effect.
• Screen flashes green when you pick up a health orb.
• Results screen now has a level select button, so that you can enter the next level.
• Leaderboards overhaul to look better.
• To help with the visual clarity of the tutorial UI, some UI elements were adjusted and given new colors.
• New font in menus that supports Chinese languages.
• The Main Menu button has been replaced with a Level Select button in the Results Screen.
• Molotov explosions are now aligned with the ground.

Bugfixes:

• Optimized collisions in onboarding, Dark Aurora, and Truuli Peak levels
• Fixed a bug that caused the screen to flash red upon picking up a green health orb.
• Fixed a crash caused by picking up two pickups on the same tick.
• Fixed button input for dropping weapons on the controller.
• Fixed character going for another trick after a failed combo.
• Fixed pause menu buttons leading to incorrect menus.
• Fixed UI Scaling in menus.
• Fixed snow trail at the tutorial level.
• Fixed a lot of collision issues at the tutorial level.

Known Issues

• The landscape at the end of Truuli Peak becomes transparent infrequently.
• Loading the levels on a lower-end machine will create issues where it pops in.
• After losing a combo, getting kills without a combo score will not update the score display until the player does a trick.

Here’s what’s new in version 1.1

Patch Highlights:

NEW

• GORE – GIBS – BLOOD: The Snowmobile Enemy now explodes and the character on it explodes into pieces!
• New tutorial section

Teaches players the score system.

• The levels now have names in our updated Level Select menu.
• New level progression, make sure to get at least a C score to progress to the next level!
• Leaderboard now shows your own score & rank at the bottom.

Gameplay Changes:

Damage Feedback

• The red vignette is much more prominent when getting shot.
• When you’re below 30 health, you get a pulsing vignette around the screen to indicate you’re badly hurt.

• Tricks refilling per weapon type has been boosted by a bit, Rocket launcher, lightning gun and SMG gain more ammo when you do tricks and the minigun gains a bit less.
• When going out of bounds, a respawn effect will play while it occurs.

Balance Changes:

SMG

• Projectile speed: 1200=>4800.

Rocket Launcher

• Delay between shots: 2.5 => 1.0.

Sniper Enemy

• Damage reduced from 200 => 70.

Enemy Molotov

• Reduced range of Molotov to match.

Bugfixes & QoL Changes:

QoL Changes:

• Changed resolution settings on some menus to be more readable and consistent.
• Added a loading screen to make it clear a level is being loaded.

Bugfixes:

• Fixed old achievements. Impossible to get achievements were removed.
• Fixed the death screen, removed black box widget that was not supposed to be there.
• Fixed UI showing incorrect weapon icons for pickups.
• Fixed predetermined pickups. Collecting two in a row will correctly grant you both weapons.

Known Issues

• Some UI elements in the tutorial level do not scale correctly. 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios are recommended.
• Molotov explosions are rotated incorrectly when they spawn in.
• Loading Screen dissapears too fast. You will ocassionaly see the level get loaded in.
• Rare issue, when collecting a pickup, the UI for it will show "None". Its recommended to drop the weapon right away.

WELCOME SHREDDERS!!!

Over the past 2 months, we have worked with all the feedback you guys have given us and improved the game for a better feel, gameplay and experience. We hope that you enjoy the game in the best form it has been since our Early Access release. Feel free to share your feedback in the Shred Off Discord Server[discord.gg].

Here’s what’s new in version 1.0

Patch Highlights:

New achievements have been added to the game.
A new tutorial Level has been added to the game.
New settings are available.

UPDATED

The difficulty of the game was adjusted. The goal was to make combat less forgiving. Enemies now hit the player more often and weapons received several balance changes.

Receiving a weapon you don’t want to use or don’t suit the situation was frustrating, so we added an option to drop or swap between collected pickups.
Menus received a visual update.
Levels have undergone lighting and colour grading changes.
The pixelated look of the game has been polished to be more readable and professional.

Gameplay Changes:

Out of Bounds

The player will be teleported back to the level when going out-of-bounds.

Combat

The player can now receive up to 2 weapon pickups.
The player can swap between collected pickups.
Weapon pickups can be dropped.

Tricks

Tricks are now activated upon tapping the button (previously you were able to hold it).
Boost on a successful trick will now happen more consistently when going off a ramp.

Balance Changes:

The difficulty of the game was too easy, so we are adjusting the damage of weapons and reducing the effective weapon lock-on range.

Revolver

Reload Speed: 1s => 1.6s.
Shoot delay: 0.20s => 0.25s

SMG

Ammo from 100 -> 50.

Mini-Gun

Ammo 500 -> 150.
Damage 17.5 -> 5.

Lightning

Ammo from 100 reduced to 50
Damage: 4 => 6

Health Orb

Application after pickup: 2.0 -> 1.5.

Other

Auto-Aim Range for all weapons reduced from 250000 to 6000 units.
Default camera sensitivity was increased when using the Mouse.
Combo Timer has been lowered: 7.0 -> 5.0
Points for “Air kills” have been lowered: 2.000 -> 1.500

Enemies

Accuracy was improved.

Bugfixes & QoL Changes:

QoL Changes:

UI now has a PS1 shader to better match the overall look of the game.
The camera angle restriction was reduced to give the player more control over the camera.
The Lightning Gun now can be fired even with no valid targets.
Additional audio feedback has been added.
Audio Mix was adjusted.
Movement and steering animation transitions have been improved.

Bugfixes:

Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash after restarting or switching levels.
Fixed a bug where you couldn’t hit the Snowmobile with the Revolver.
Fixed certain sounds not being affected by the low-health filter.
Fixed a bug that lowered the sniper’s accuracy.

Known Issues

We recommend that you play this build with Mouse & Keyboard! There are still big issues related to controller input.

Leaderboards may not load properly, if this happens play the level twice to see the leaderboards for that level.
Leaderboards are currently not controller compatible.
Dropping your weapon on the Controller does not register the input.
The player character model is affected by the environmental lighting.

We are working hard on fixing these problems and will update it on our next patch!

Control Scheme Guide

Hey everyone, we have launched the game in Early Access, but as mentioned in the release message, the game lacks information about how to play the game.

To help all you shredders out, we have released a guide that explains all controls on both controller and mouse and keyboard which can be found here!

We would like to apologize for missing something as critical as this and hope you will still enjoy playing this game. Thank you for your time.

Shred Off is available in Early Access!

We are excited to announce that Shred Off is now available on Steam! fromthetop has been working on this game for the past 5 months to create a snowboarding action game with guns!

In this 3rd-person action, snowboarding shooter, the player performs Stylish tricks in the Alaskan mountains while gunning down enemies with an arsenal of ranged weaponry. Shred down the mountain on your snowboard to get a high score while competing against your friends!

With the game being in Early Access, we would like to remind you that what you will be seeing in this build is not representative of the final product. But that is why we want to hear your feedback so we can improve the game and deliver an exciting experience! You can do so by reporting bugs, giving feedback in-game via the menu or talking in the Steam forums!

This is a student project done by a team of 12 people from Breda University of Applied Sciences.

We hope you enjoy the game and have a thrilling experience!

What is available in the Early Access?

We have 2 Levels, that will still be iterated upon in future updates.
Across these levels there are 4 enemy types that challenge your skill.
You can fight them using 5 different weapons equipped from pickup boxes!
When finishing the levels, you will be presented with your score and time!

What do we plan to improve in the future?

We want to work as soon as possible on a tutorial, so we can teach you how to play the game.
All User Interfaces in the game, from the HUD to the menus.
Work on the environment in the levels and look of the game to commit to the PSX style.
Add more complexity to the scoring system.
Improve and polish the feel of the game.
Fixing bugs!

What do we plan to add in the future?

An Original Player Character! The girl on the cover will be our official player character.
Steam Achievements!
In-game leaderboards to directly compare your score with friends or people around the world.
Improved Settings Menu to edit the game to your liking.

Known Issues

Levels - There are collision issues in the levels that the character might respond poorly to.
Critical Bug - There is a possibility for fatal error when loading a level.
Critical Bug - Revolver can't hit Snowmobile Enemy
Controller - The controller input to drop your special pickup weapon does not work.
Weapons - The pickups sink into the ground over time, making them unavailable.
Enemies - Snowmobile enemies stay alive after being killed.
Settings - The Auto Aim accesibility setting gets reset everytime a level is loaded.
