This is the same red dead redemption/undead nightmare you uncs will know and love but with some important caveats:

- 50USD for a game from 2010, not remade or remastered, just a port that you can run at 4k/high framerates
- you have the license on steam, but you still need rockstar's launcher to play it
- this means your cloud saving will also be handled by rockstar, and you need a rockstar account
- rockstar also opted this game OUT of steam family, so you can't share it with your household
- RDR online just straight up doesn't exist in this version of the game

it runs well on the steam deck, and it's still one of the best games of all time. I got it on the autumn sale at -20% but I still think that was overpaying for this rehash. Maybe once this dips to -50% I could recommend it in good conscience.

I can finally delete the totally-legally-obtained Xbox 360 and Switch ISOs of this game off my SSD!

This game contains specific save points so I cannot save my game as often as I would like. Especially for a game that is frequently crashing at random.

Overall, RDR is pretty good. There's a few bugs here and there but nothing too bad.
The controls and movement at times, feel a little clunky and the side activities all feel boring.
Considering this is a 14 year old game i can't really criticise too much, but what really lets this game down is the price and the Rockstar launcher.

Plays very well on Deck without having to adjust any settings.

Ridiculous pricing? Yes. But an amazing 14+ year old game finally on pc that is my peak childhood for that wild price, I will do. This game is priceless. While it does show some age, it does in a good way. While RDR2 is more of an immersive experience with a wildly fun cast, an amazingly written story from start to finish added an ambient soundtrack to immerse yourself with the landscapes around you on the massive map they provide, RDR 1 is more like the spaghetti western version of that.

Taking place after RDR2, we follow John Marston having to hunt down the rest of his old posse mates. You have to fight your way through New Austin and a Mexico to get to them. This is accompanied by probably the most western movie sounding soundtrack of the two games (not counting Red Dead Revolver, that OST is a monster of its own).

This game is much more simplified compared to RDR2 and is more straight forward. The story experience is great start to finish and imo has the best ending Rockstar has ever made for a game.
If you've only played RDR2, buy this game either full price or on sale (your money, your choice). If you've played neither and want a great story experience, buy both, you won't regret it.

The game is great, but I can't recommend it until Rockstar starts fixing their games.
They know about errors in game but are way too lazy to do anything about it.

Look, the original Red Dead is one of the most definitive western role playing games to ever grace the Earth. Because this game is nothing new, it's been out for a long while and this port did nothing to the original game as it's simply a port; my review is going to be specific to the PC experience for both the main game + Undead Nightmare and nothing else.

This is certainly the kind of review where I wish I could just leave a comment based review rather than giving a definitive thumbs up or thumbs down. It's a classic, and anyone who has never played it definitely should - but it doesn't make it worth the price tag Rockstar has slapped on the over decade old title.

The port so far has been very smooth work by Double Eleven, and while I've experienced bugs with the port in specific, nothing major has occurred yet in my 16 hours of playtime at the time of this review. Bugs aside, nothing much new has been added at all really, but I've found most PC features that should be included in the options have been thankfully. No new graphics stuff has occurred obviously, and everything is pretty much the exact same as the original title you played back on console. It's a bare and simple port. Nothing more, nothing less.

With all of that being said, do I recommend this port at $50? No, I do not. Will most hardcore fans of Red Dead fork out the $50 anyways if they have it to experience a classic on a platform they always wanted it on (such as myself), well, yes quite apparently so. But that audience is not everyone, and so I'd like to be up front in saying - I would have been much happier paying $30 - $40 on this title, but even $40 is pushing it. Unfortunately Rockstar continues their greedy ways and manages to nostalgia bait it's player-base, where I am admittedly a well aware victim of that.

All in all, if you really, really wanted this game on PC for many years like myself - I suppose it'd be worth it. But my personal recommendation would be to wait for a sale and pick it up some day when it's not it's current full price.
