how to make cat meow for an attention?

The game is really cute, but the steam achievements don't seem to work. Is there any way to fix that?

The cat is supposed to appear on your desktop right? Mine doesn't, it stays in it's own window instead. Could it be because I'm on Linux or am I supposed to activate that function first? Also the shortcuts don't seem to work for me either. Shortcuts for Windows don't work in my experience, other apps have the same problem....
