Now available on PC and consoles, the latest Smurfs adventure can be experienced in both single-player and two-player modes. Here, we explain how you and a buddy can join forces (or play tricks on each other) in this epic quest against the villainous Gargamel...


Playing with a friend in The Smurfs – Dreams is a piece of cake: simply choose between Solo and Co-op at the start of the game. Before setting off to explore, each team mate can visit Tailor Smurf to pick a costume. Whether you go for the firefighter, the karate or the luchador outfit, see who has the smurfest look!

“The co-op mode was an obvious choice for us, because The Smurfs is a franchise for all ages that brings together families and friends,” explained Thomas Freund, Lead Level Designer at Ocellus Studio. “What’s more, when we designed Marsupilami: Hoobadventure, we got a lot of requests from players for a co-op mode.”

So the development team included a multi-player dimension right from the outset of the project, with the aim of creating an experience that’s just as satisfying in solo and co-op mode. “If any of the gameplay features didn’t work in one of the two modes, we scrapped it,” stated Thomas.


Together, we’re stronger! When playing in co-op, you can collect objects faster in the mini-games, for example. You can also improve your defense by jumping on enemies chasing your buddy. Or you can each take a different task: in Vanity Smurf’s dream, the players turn into a tetromino, with one controlling movement while the other controls rotation.

The Smurfs – Dreams is all about communicating with your team mate: “If you’re both standing on a platform that will disappear when one jumps off, then you need to coordinate to avoid one of you taking a fall,” pointed out Thomas. But you can be mischievous if you feel like it too! From the hammer that squashes everything flat to the magic lantern that makes the ground disappear, there are plenty of opportunities to pester your partner! 😉

However you choose to play, it’s clear that both players are equally important in the co-op mode in The Smurfs – Dreams. This was very important for Ocellus Studio. “We did a lot of fine tuning to make sure that a player who’s lagging behind their partner doesn’t feel left out,” told us Thomas. “We did this, for example, by making the camera zoom out to allow the player to stay on the screen for long enough before being teleported to their partner.”


Oodles of fun, a sprinkling of tricks and zero frustration: this is what the team were aiming to serve up with the co-op mode in The Smurfs – Dreams, available now. “I think that players are going to have a lot of fun in co-op mode,” concluded Thomas. “The feedback was very positive at events like Gamescom and Games Made in France, as well as from the playable demo. We put a lot of work into making the experience as enjoyable as possible.”

In The Smurfs - Dreams, get ready to discover worlds you've never seen before. You'll be leaving the forest to enter the dreams of several Smurfs who have been put to sleep by Gargamel! For Ocellus Studio, the game's creator, the dream concept is the perfect opportunity to offer settings that are truly out of the ordinary. “Dreams represent the epitome of creative freedom, the place where we can come up with the most outlandish and magical ideas,” reveals Art Director Jordan Parrin. “The constraints of reality no longer exist; we can defy the laws of physics, make objects infinitely large or small, and so much more besides.”

The amazing worlds you'll be able to explore in The Smurfs - Dreams are:

• Chef Smurf's dream: He's the one who's passionate about culinary delights, and loves to cook for the whole village. So, not unsurprisingly, his dream is all about food, and above all about desserts. Here, the snow is whipped cream and the lava, caramel. The problem is, the Smurfs are desperate to devour this deliciously sweet decor. Your job is to bring them to their senses, by venturing to the terrifying Bigmouth's house to retrieve a special ingredient.
  
  
• Smurfette's dream: She's not just the only girl in the village, she also has a dark past, having been originally created by Gargamel to wreak havoc. So, her dream expresses this dual identity, offering a green and pleasant, flower-filled land, which at any moment could ‘slip away’ and turn into a dark and desolate landscape. Our mission is to reconcile these two worlds, which make up the complex nature of Smurfette.
  
  
• Vanity Smurf's dream: This quirky character is fascinated by beauty, especially his own and is constantly admiring himself in the mirror! In his dream, which takes place above the clouds, everything is wonderfully elegant: a place of gilding, mosaics, marble and statues. “This was my favorite world to work on,” confides Jordan Parrin, “Because it allowed me to draw on multiple influences in the history of art, such as the Baroque and Art Nouveau movements.”
  
  
• ... and there's one last mysterious world. We won't reveal who this dream belongs to, but as you may have glimpsed in the trailers, this one is altogether more sinister and nightmarish, complete with dungeons and poisonous swamps... Aaaahh! 😬 Find out more when you play the game on October 24th.

As you will see, with this new episode, Ocellus Studio has sought to plunge players into unexpected worlds. But that's not all! The sets will also be as close as possible to the visual quality of the animated films. “Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, and our experience with Marsupilami - Hoobadventure, we've been able to take things as far as possible, particularly with regard to lighting and the number of Smurfs on screen,” comments Jordan Parrin.

Another point that sets the environments apart is their liveliness and rich animation. Players will often come across Smurfs squabbling, chatting or fishing, and they'll be able to say hello to them. There will also be numerous interactions with the sets such as a flower that produces musical notes and a sign that turns on itself when you bump into it, among others. “When the world reacts to our presence in a game, it is all the more rewarding and immersive,” observes Jordan.

This year, our friends the Smurfs will be fighting Gargamel in fantastic settings, in their new adventure for PC and consoles: The Smurfs - Dreams. Here, we’re going to take a look at the various actions you’ll be able to perform with your controller in hand. Without smurfer ado, let’s get started!


In The Smurfs – Dreams, players will begin in the center of the Smurfs’ village. There, a giant magic pillow will transport them into the world of dreams, where they will need to save their sleeping friends. Following a more linear tutorial stage, players will be able to choose which order they want to complete the levels in. To control the player character, with a Nintendo Switch controller, for example, the left joystick is to move, the B button is to jump and the Y button is to run, while the left triggers are to greet other characters, and the right triggers are to throw objects or use gadgets.

Once you’ve grasped the controls, you can begin to master a central element of the gameplay: jumping and platforms! Thomas Freund, Lead Level Design at Ocellus Studio, explained to us how The Smurfs – Dreams offers a whole range of jumps: “You can do little or big jumps by varying how long you hold down the button. Your Smurf can also come down more slowly by kicking their feet if you tap it again after a jump. They can even stay in the air for a few seconds using a magic bubble if you press Y after a jump, and then leap off the bubble to cover some more distance.”

This wide range of movements will help you overcome the many challenges in the environments, including platforms that move, shrink, bounce or disappear before your very eyes. And then, there will be enemies standing in your way! These include the “Little followers”: persistent beetles that will stay hot on the heels of your Smurf. Or the “Turrets”: little spiders that will shoot at you using a canon mounted on their back. You will need to keep all your wits about you to overcome these foes, particularly the end-of-level bosses, like The Hungry One, a voracious giant with a bottomless stomach...


And that’s not all, because The Smurfs – Dreams will require much more than just reflexes in the face of devious enemies and treacherous platforms. The adventure will also be dotted with mentally challenging puzzles! “We think these puzzles will add diversity and depth to the experience,” Thomas Freund told us. “They could involve finding the right order to press buttons in, spotting something that can only be seen reflected in a mirror, or escorting a dragonfly to its destination.”

While some puzzles will have to be solved to progress through the adventure, other optional puzzles will reward curious players with various items: Sarsaparilla to buy costumes for your character, stellar mushrooms to unlock secret levels, reels of thread to unlock special outfits... In The Smurfs – Dreams, it will pay off to explore all the nooks and crannies, to earn extra levels and beautiful items that will make you the best-looking Smurf in the village!

With so many things to do, the most committed players will be able to spend a dozen hours discovering all the secrets. But the game is also designed for less experienced players, who will be able to complete the game without too much trouble. If you liked Super Mario 3D World or Sackboy: A Big Adventure, we think you will love The Smurfs – Dreams. Don’t expect to be in totally familiar territory, though, as you may be surprised!

With the platformer The Smurfs – Dreams, set for release at the end of the year, Ocellus Studio will once again immerse us in this cult comic and cartoon franchise! Here, we will be looking at how the team is managing to remain faithful to the vast world created by Peyo in 1958.

With more than 60 comic books, as well as many films, TV series and video games, there is a huge amount of Smurfs lore and canon to take in! This is why, in creating The Smurfs – Dreams, Ocellus Studio is doing its utmost to honor the franchise. “The last thing we want to do is to distort it, out of respect for the author and all the people who have grown up with it," Art Director Jordan Parrin summed up , guarantor of the game’s consistency with the world of the Smurfs.

The Smurfs – Dreams is particularly inspired by the latest film from Sony Pictures Animation, Smurfs: The Lost Village, drawing on its stylized and realistic aesthetic. A lot of work is being put into achieving an effect that is close to cinema quality, despite the technical limits of consumer gaming consoles. This is not the only inspiration, though: “We are also drawing a lot on the comic books, by using classic comic features like onomatopoeia, which help players follow the story,” Jordan told us.

To create an authentic Smurfs game, Ocellus Studio carefully compares its work with everything that has been produced up until today, and requests approval from the company that owns the franchise: IMPS, founded by Véronique Culliford. “For instance, there is the Smurfs’ village, an iconic part of the comics, which we reconstructed in Dreams,” Jordan mentioned. “We had a lot of exchanges about the number of houses, their positions... For IMPS, it was crucial for us to respect the houses’ proportions and colors; as for the positioning, we were free to create a layout that made the most sense in terms of gameplay, and convenience for the players.”

Despite all this, Ocellus Studio can’t be satisfied with just faithfully reproducing the known world of the Smurfs! “Players might get tired of always exploring the forest biome,” Jordan confirmed. “From the outset, our ambition was to stand out, and offer some totally original concepts.”

So, how do you pull off creating an all-new story and amazing, never-before-seen environments, while staying true to the identity of the Smurfs franchise? “Our approach is to begin with an existing element, and then give it a fresh perspective,” Jordan explained. “Take the dream of Vanity Smurf, for example. It had never been explored before. But it’s based on the familiar personality of this Smurf who’s obsessed by appearances and beauty. So, his dream world has luxurious architecture, with gilding and marble, all surrounded by clouds to give it a heavenly ambiance. And the world is of course filled with mirrors: Vanity Smurf loves to gaze at his reflection. We’ll be interacting with them a lot in terms of gameplay.”

Between reconstructing iconic parts of the franchise and creating totally fresh gaming experiences, The Smurfs – Dreams will offer plenty of laughs for both veterans and newcomers to the franchise.
