Terror at Oakheart is a 2D simple side scrolling game that plays out like an 80's slasher movie. It is almost like a typical "3D Walking Simulator" game, but in 2D. For the first 80% of the game there is hardly any shooting or action, most of the gameplay comes strictly in 2D where you walk around, collect items, and unfold the story.
This is not a metroidvania, the levels are super simple where you just walk left or right. There is an abundant of action in the last chapter of the game, shooting different unique monsters, and a really cool epic boss fight. The whole game takes approximately 3 hours to 100%, 2.5 hours to complete the main game, and then after beating the main game you unlock a fun super retro 20 minute mini game to play.

+ The games sound track is outstanding. Retro 80's horror synthwave.
+ Amazing 2D pixel art and animation. Lots of Gore.
+ The story that unfolds is basic, but interesting in its own way. The game is dripping with its own style.
+ Most of the slasher kills we have seen before, but the game's animated style keeps things fun and fresh.

+/- Some people might get bored during the first half of the game's lack of action.
+/- The last chapter is the total opposite of the first 80% of the game, lots of action, and it is actually very challenging at parts.

- Some parts of the game are a bit too dark. I know its supposed to be dark in places, but I'd like to see more of the awesome pixel art the game has on my screen.

Preface that this is more a negative neutral than a hard no. Terror at Oakheart is an amateurishly written slasher in side-scrolling pixel art form. About half the game is more a walking sim than anything else, laying out plot events with an almost charming predictability. Then, eventually, you reach the "survival horror" portion, which is more side-scrolling action than survival or horrific. It's... fine. Some of the killer's kills are charmingly animated, even if I recognize what they're stealing their concepts from. Its reuse of environments, re-contextualizing them before and after disaster, is fun, even if the warping is too severe at times (shifting from twisted familiarity to just unfamiliar). But it's not even particularly spooky., plays its hand far too openly instead of holding back on its cosmic horror elements (not a spoiler, that's the prologue), has only the slightest hint of survival horror resource management with its unlimited ammo.

I swung between neutral positive and neutral negative on this for a bit, but the fact that I dropped it so close to the end is why I ultimately landed on thumbs down. I got to just before the end of the last chapter (I think) before putting it down. I fought through what I thought was the final boss, only for there to be a second, larger one. My mind went. Oh, ok. I don't really want to do this. So I didn't. An attempt with some charm, but isn't campy or scary or articulate enough to really appeal to any camp of horror fans I know.

If you like a bit of gore and horror without having to do too much in the way of engaging your brain, this might be the game for you. The pixelart looks nice, the animations are smooth. That's pretty much all this game has going for it, but if that floats your boat (as it did mine), have a (shotgun) blast with it!
