Game does a TERRIBLE job of explaining to the player how to actually play.

I just started the game and like it very much. But I have a question which surely someone with more experience can answer: I realized that the resource modules (science creator, industry generator and food replicator) cost increase for each new module and only generate resources if a new door is opened. So if Industry generator II costs 40 industry but only brings 4 per door, I would need to open over 10 doors to make it profitable, which is a lot. So when should I stop building those?
