Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 37:

Ever wondered who scrubs the blood off the walls after a space marine finishes their job? Viscera Cleanup Detail puts you in the boots of a space janitor, tasked with cleaning up the aftermath of alien massacres, sci-fi experiments gone wrong, and sometimes even holiday-themed horror. It’s a one-of-a-kind mix of meditative tidying, environmental storytelling, and slapstick chaos powered by janky physics. Whether you’re roleplaying the galaxy’s most serious sanitation worker or laughing with friends while slipping on guts, VCD is a weirdly memorable experience.

VCD is a niche game with a passionate cult following, and for good reason! It’s unlike anything else on the market. The premise is hilarious, the gameplay oddly meditative, and the multiplayer experience is both chaotic and cathartic.

That said, it’s far from flawless. Janky physics, lack of quality-of-life features, and some frustrating mechanics (like the RNG dispenser or weak Sniffer) can make full completion feel like a chore. Still, if you have the patience (or a few friends) it’s a riotously messy good time.

🧽 Pros:

• One-of-a-kind premise. Genuinely fresh and bizarrely engaging. There’s nothing quite like restoring order after absolute carnage.
  
  
• Deeply satisfying. Watching a room slowly go from blood-drenched nightmare to pristine floor-to-ceiling clean is immensely rewarding.
  
  
• Visuals. A little dated, but charming in its own way. Grimy textures and over-the-top blood spatter sell the chaos effectively.
  
  
• Co-op fun. Best enjoyed in multiplayer. Team up for efficiency—or sabotage your friends by kicking over their bloody buckets.
  
  
• Map variety. Labs, alien nests, haunted houses, and even a blood-soaked Santa’s workshop. Each level tells a story through its grime.
  
  
• Missions are
• long. A small map can take up to 2 hours, while larger maps are usually around 4 hours for me.
  
  
• Freedom of approach. Clean efficiently, roleplay as an underpaid corporate drone, or make things worse just for fun.
  
  
• Great atmosphere. Ambience, squishy sound effects, and subtle audio storytelling make the experience strangely immersive.

🧹 Cons:

• Physics-based jank. Buckets tip too easily, bodies glitch through walls, bins clip into other objects—all hilarious until you're on hour two of mopping.
  
  
• Slippery, imprecise object handling. Trying to stack items, grab specific limbs, or even place things neatly can feel like fighting the controls.
  
  
• RNG machines are infuriating! Need a clean bucket? Get a bloody foot instead. The dispenser actively works against you sometimes.
  
  
• Repetitive in solo play. Without friends, large maps can turn into monotonous grinds. Co-op balances out the tedium with chaos.
  
  
• The Sniffer tool isn’t enough: Unlike PowerWash Simulator or Crime Scene Cleaner, VCD lacks proper highlighting or tracking tools. The sniffer helps, but barely—especially on massive maps. Trash and blood can be tucked into impossible corners, and trying to reach 100% becomes a pixel-hunting nightmare.
  
  
• Unclear finish conditions. The game won’t tell you what’s missing or when you’ve truly cleaned everything unless you clock out and hope your score reflects it.
  
  
• Buggy achievements: Progress doesn’t always register correctly, and some tasks may need redoing due to bugs.

It's crazy how tedious this game is. Usually I find games like this oddly relaxing, and captivating. I find humor and enjoyment in the quiet and subtle telling of stories. This game just misses the mark for me, and the gore is everywhere indiscriminately with zero story. Maybe it's the level I played, maybe it's because I was tackling it alone and it needs to be played multiplayer for pacing, but it's going to have to be a staunch no from me.
