Interest in the STAR OCEAN series is currently quite high with the release of the latest numbered game STAR OCEAN THE DIVINE FORCE. On top of that, STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY was a particularly popular title in the series and many fans have called for a remake. That was why we wanted to deliver the remake of it this year, which marks the 25th anniversary of the original game’s release.

The original STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY packed in a cornucopia of classic JRPG elements that really communicated the variety in its characters and story, such as the multifaceted narrative told through two different protagonists, multiple different endings and the numerous characters from both the sci-fi and fantasy sides and the unique side quest system that depicted details of their lives.
We think that the depth and richness of the experience that THE SECOND STORY provided was a key factor in why fans still have such strong memories of the game.
With THE SECOND STORY R, we have added many new features to enhance players enjoyment of the story, such as all-new illustrations and a new system that allows players to jump into the side stories even more easily. We hope that fans can enjoy both the main narrative and the many intriguing sub stories equally.

We discussed the appeal of the pixel art style that is firmly established in player’s memories of the game and strived to maintain that JRPG essence, while also aiming to update it to look fresh and fit well with the latest hardware. This approach was not just about improving the quality of the pixel art, but also involved using special pixel shaders and other effects. The challenge we set ourselves was to visualize what kind of visuals would make the characters in a 3D world feel alive and leave an impression on players.

We did not change the story progression, but instead worked on updating its presentation. At the same time, we re-built the world map, the towns and the dungeons etc. where that story takes place in the newer style. The various different regions of the game have had new quests, items and other activities added, so hopefully we have created a world that doesn’t just look nice but is also rewarding to explore.
On top of that, there are several new mechanics added to battles to give the combat an even higher tempo than in previous STAR OCEAN games and make it even more explosive and exhilarating.

The changes to the battle system were mainly aimed at making combat feel more exciting, by increasing the speed at which fights play out and making the visuals look flashier and more explosive. These changes also aimed to give more of a feeling that you were fighting alongside your comrades.
Watch out for further news on the new features of the game in future.

We hope that fans who have previously played the original version can experience how the setting for the adventure has expanded and become even more beautiful, while enjoying the stories of the memorable party characters.
In addition, with the new version, we have succeeded in adding full voiceovers for all events, using the original voice cast, something that was not possible at the time. We are certain that this is something which will satisfy fan demands.
For people who are completely new to STAR OCEAN, We hope that they can start out by casually enjoying the game’s stimulating, high-speed battles in a 2D environment, before setting off on a journey at their own pace, into STAR OCEAN’s unique world that brings together fantasy and sci-fi.

They can indeed. The game can be fully enjoyed by all fans of modern or retro RPGS. The game is a remake of the second title in the STAR OCEAN series, but no knowledge of the previous game is required to understand the story it tells.
The series’ unique storytelling awaits you, depicting a clash of different civilizations and cultures, as well as the adventures of a varied cast of characters making big decisions that affect their lives.
The action battle system created in the first game has also been upgraded to an even faster and more exhilarating experience fitting for a modern game. Just jump in and enjoy a fast and frantic melee with a feast of gorgeous visual effects flying across the battlefield.

One of the defining features of the STAR OCEAN series is that it is an action RPG where battles play out in real-time. However, the controls are very easy to master, and, in this version, they have been made even more accessible, so you can even unleash your character’s special moves with a single button press. These potent abilities consume MP, but there are many ways to recover your MP through weapons and other battle mechanics. In the early part of the adventure, you can just keep using your special attacks and recover your MP with the “Blackberries” item whenever you need to.
On top of that, when you arrive in a new town, We urge you to try out the “Private Action” events. These let you discover new episodes involving your allies that are separate from the main storyline. The spots where Private Actions trigger are all shown as icons on the map, so go and check it out when you see one.
