This was a very enjoyable WW2 tactical game! It had a few odd misses, but for the most part it was filling that tactical-based RPG craving i get.

The game lets you control up to 6 squad mates (7 if you receive one in the field). You can equip your squad with various Allied and German gear. It also has a mild upgrade system for the weapons, which was nice. Your character can level up, and each soldier type has its own skill tree and stats you can raise.

The game has a fair amount of depth. If you equip German equipment across the board, then the germans ignore you, though elite units tend to see through the disguise. The stealth system is better than the Jagged Alliance 3 system and is very intuitive to plan your future turns. You can use knives to sneak up and kill germans, or commandos can throw knives at range and silently kill enemies. Lots of variety of equipment types and stats to chew on and decide between,

In addition the game has a base building phase, where you can build out and expand your base, build gun range, kitchen, medical bay, and a place to service and repair damaged weapons (yes weapons degrade over time) and more! You can also ask for various kinds of assistance from Washington, Moscow, and London, as well as a some independent spy network. You can request, food and medicine, Money, gear, or new soldiers. I had 12 soldiers by the end game.

You can also do expeditions to gather wood or hunt for food. You also have to deal with Winter, which can result in frostbite if you don’t have wood stoves in a building, and infections if you don’t have a proper mess area, and result in troop needing to go to the med tent to get treatment.

There is a lot of subtle depth to the game, but you can also play it as a straightforward tactical battle sim and ignore any parts you choose not to dig into

The big miss is the story beats. The game is full of world events that play out and you get notified of. However, for some reason it misses D Day and the invasion of Germany as events, lots of events i wasn’t aware of, but for some reason misses the BIG ones that tell you how the war is shifting.

There are optional objectives for many of the missions, and a decent variety to missions, but they really missed the opportunity for the player to influence the end of the war triggering.

My final complaint is that the game takes about 35 hours, and the last 10 nothing new happening making it a slug, like I said making tough optional objectives to speed of the end, would have been a perfect way to address this.
