i don't want to give voidborn a negative review. although the game has genuinely beautiful environments and fun gameplay ideas that make it unique even from its biggest inspiration regarding moment-to-moment gameplay (you know the one), unfortunately the game lacks in two main areas for me

polish. there are a fair bit of bugs, ranging from random knowledge checks to potentially softlocking your run. for example, there are just a lot of inconsistencies are incorrect tooltips when choosing upgrades during a run. typically, if you choose an alt fire upgrade for a weapon on one that already has one, it'll say it will override the old one with the new (happens with stuff other than alt fires yaya). sometimes, it won't say it will override it, but it will; sometimes, something that seemingly should override the old one just doesn't? i saw no logic or patterns to it, and i swear at some point X had overridden Y, but the same Y didn't override the same X /shrug. as for the more gamebreaking bugs, there is a certain boss that's a stationary structure i guess, and sometimes it likes to leave the map. specifically, a weapon ability i had launched it out of the map, and i had to break through the invisible barriers of the map, fly with recoil + other movement, kill it while trying not to fall out of the map, then slowly fly back to the boss arena just so my run didn't end there. lol. there's also little stuff regarding polish, like some things having eh feedback (imo) and enemies having like no way of alerting you at all.

from experience, i feel as if the roguelite parts of the game are eh? upgrading your weapons with certain passives is okay, and some of those passives are actually neat, but as far as i can tell there are only 2 for each weapon, and to me there was always one that seemed better and more fun so eh. i only ever found 2 trinkets or whatever they are called, and both were pretty underwhelming in terms of swag. from what i saw, those were the only 2 forms of meta progression, so i didn't like it much, but that alone isn't a dealbreaker for me, i'm not usually one to care about meta progression specifically anyways. however the, in my opinion, lack of build variety in runs is much more noticeable and makes me feel meh. i feel like i kept seeing the same upgrades from my first two runs over and over again, and the environments and a lot of other stuff is basically static, so it doesn't really feel like a roguelike or whatever.

Really really sick game. Needs a little bit of polish but overall amazing. Except that the final boss is literally impossible. Good luck.
