If you are a fan of Pokemon Gold/Silver as well as taking in a fresh perspective on monster capture games, then Dokimon: Quest is absolutely the game for you!

As a lifelong Pokemon fan in both competitive and relaxed nature, Dokimon: Quest really allowed me to relive some of those experiences from when I first sat down with my GameBoy.

Art style, music and game play all hit those nostalgia marks to really enjoy the game with an open mind.

In a competitive market for games this type, and with options for cheaper and free alternatives- what would be the benefit for getting Dokimon: Quest? I would look past the game and go straight to the developer, Yanako RPGs. They have built a community and extremely reactive to feedback. An independent Dev that is quick to react and listen to the player's feedback/suggestions is worth its weight in gold, and certainly makes the game that much better.

My final thoughts would be that, whilst mentioning other games earlier that also have appealing factors, each game is individual to themselves and the team behind them. Stepping out of your comfort zone to try something new is always an adventure, and Dokimon: Quest is a fantastic game to either start that new journey or be a companion for you on an existing one.

I’m no games expert or insane enjoyer of these types of games, I personally find them very boring, hang me if you will but not really a Pokémon games fan. I haven’t played any of its more recent ones just back on my DS and all that when I was a child. Reason I say this is because, a monster tamer is never my first choice of game, yet I have enjoyed watching this game being developed and playing it. I have not fully finished it myself as like I mentioned it isn’t exactly my cup of tea. But I’ve enjoyed it nonetheless the less, my hours are low however that’s mostly because I played downloaded version etc sent me to or via another website I forget its name. So I think that’s why because 4 hours just ain’t right I’ve streamed this game for longer.

The game is not fully flushed out with all your modern bits and bobs, compatibility for every remote under the sun, ability to change every setting to your liking. The game is made to support KEYBOARD the thing literally everyone has and some other things, I forget what but there’s a couple. Sure how depressing you can’t use your own special remote, but that’s a you problem, the developer has done their due diligence and the game works.

The developer themself:
a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wonderful human, they have passion for their projects which can’t be said for some developers. They’re open to feedback, they listen, if they say no they say why, and so on. Updates are given on game progress, the game isn’t abandoned despite being out for a little again unlike some other devs, names not to be mentioned.

Gameplay:
Little repetitive for me, but that’s just the genre, like I’ve said not a fan of it, I prefer blowing stuff up which I did get by breaking out of the map more than once. (All fixed very shortly after being reported). The levelling up does take a while but there are like in any game ways to make it faster. My own personal dislike is the map, I find it kinda confusing and sorta useless, now that’s the like map to show where you are not the level design. The level design is actually pretty straight forward, you can sort of always see where the path forward is, what might be a hidden path unlocked later and so forth. So I liked it. The hints can be a little vague at times but I also spam through dialog and don’t pay attention, yet I didn’t really have that many issues figuring out where to go next without the prompts. It’s basically “oh look this path way WAS blocked, ISN'T blocked.” At least for me that’s how it went while I played.

ARTWORK:
Sure animation is a tad “simple” no like overly expressive attack animations, and no unique death or attack animations really, but It didn’t really bother me, during fights I’m staring at the health bars and my options not the art work on screen. The animations/art it does have gets the job done, it’s nice it’s probably simple according so others, but it’s enough for me.

COST: $30 AUD (full)
If on sale then 100% with the buy, it makes a great game to play maybe while doing another activity, makes a good just cool down game. When full priced I’d say make sure it’s the type of game your actually going to play, 30 AUD I think most Australians can earn in two hours on the lower end salary’s but let’s say 3 to be safe. So with that it’s my belief that for every hour you pay for something you should get 2x the amount of use out of it in an entertainment. In this case it would be 6 hours of play time, and that’s actual playtime where you’re enjoying it or at least not doing like your 5th “follow the npc who moves 7x slower than you around” like in some games, and so with that said I think you get your moneys worth. You can get a good couple hours out of the game if not more depending how you play.

After completing the game, I definitely ran into some problems. Okay, a good handful of problems. The game was very nice, in the graphics, the music, and some of the dialogue was entertaining. The Dokimon are plentiful and the mechanics surrounding them, like being able to select moves on the go, as well as accessing the "PC" on the go, made picking up some Dokimon here and there fun, and you're able to try and plan for future battles better.

But the mention of battles is what brings most of the problems to the review. Double battles were glitchy, where you'd assign the target and the opposite target (the one NOT selected) would get hit. It messed with a fair amount of strategy for me and resulted in me being defeated because of typing advantages. A major example is when one move was x4 strong against the right target, I selected the right one, but the left target took the damage. Which wasn't x4... Along with that, there were some moves that said x2 and x4 but did less damage than moves with a x0.5 multiplier, and on a monster far less leveled. The math is VERY strange. Last but not least, I was able to pick up moves that flinched the opponent. Not once, not twice, but every single time it hit. If I found a battle difficult, I used one and was able to make my way through battles where I had a level disadvantage of over 10+... Not good.

Outside of battling, the maps look very nice and there are often plenty of places to train your Dokimon up. A few minor glitches with surfing, directives with key items to get through field obstacles, and collision. Overall, I got through it and beat the game. Despite "cheesing" it.

With a few fixes here and there, and maybe a little more clarity on some directives (like the map obstacle items), Dokimon can easily be a fan favorite. I'd recommend the game but note that I'd probably give it a 2.5 to a 3 out of 5.
