If you feed settlers with rations, it seems the numbers just flip weirdly when they get over -1day of maximum lifetime. Until shortly before only lasting 2 days (instead of the maximum 3), you can feed them a single ration to fill up their life time completely, meaning something like 23h hours filled for 1 ration. There are some things in the game that is not done by searching but "harvest", like harvesting fruits, herbs, chopping bushland or even collecting water/resin. It seems many of these options have randomised outcomes, but is that just a random roll with no factors playing or does the scavenge modifiers have any influence on this? I build the blacksmith, thinking it would let me still craft all things but also do it myself, like e.g. the other 2 previous bulk crafters.
