Sights & Sounds

Bricks as far as the eye can see

This game is a love letter to Lego. Awkwardly written, but a love letter nonetheless. Consider the level design, for example
Unlike the TT Games Lego action adventure titles that often employ non-Lego level features like grass and boulders to set the stage, ClockStone have ensured that every part of every stage (other than the white void you're floating in) is made from Lego

Graphically-speaking, it's nice-looking without doing anything too impressive. The lighting and fog look a little flat, but I love the animation of the clear blue bricks in lieu of traditional water effects
The soundtrack is serviceable, but with how much time you spend on each level, you're bound to get sick of a handful of the tracks eventually. Especially the jungle level's backing track with all the monkey noises. I wound up muting the game and listening to something else
That isn't my main complaint about the sound design, though, it's that it fails to capture the satisfying snapping sound of a brick connecting to a stud. Instead, it's that generic clicking sound the other Lego games use

Story & Vibes

Jumbled mess

As the subtitle "Bricktales" implies, there is indeed a story in this game. Unfortunately, it's an unnecessary motivator for traveling the multiverse to see the different levels
You get a letter from your grandfather telling you he has an exciting new invention to show you: a teleporter that can send you to different dimensions
What will he use it for? Fixing his theme park, it seems. Yes, in addition to being the first human to figure out interdimensional travel, he also moonlights as an inept amusement park operator
And under that flimsy pretext, you're crammed into the machine to go build stuff and collect the "happiness crystals" needed to fix all the broken rides
I suppose the game has to establish some reason for traveling to each of the five stages (jungle, desert, medieval, city, and pirate), but I would have settled for some text boxes and a level select
Pensive. Meditative. Contemplative. Those are the words I use for slow, thoughtful games when I'm enjoying myself. Bricktales is just kind of boring

Playability & Replayability

Some assembly required

The gameplay consists of traveling to a themed level, finding building sites, and then going down whatever path you just opened up. Sometimes you'll be doing it at the bidding of an NPC. Others, you'll just be doing it because you need to access a new area. Whatever the motivation, it's the same thing over and over again
Building Lego is such a tried and true leisure activity that you'd assume that it would be hard to screw up. Thankfully, Bricktales manages to capture the feeling of turning a collection of unassembled bricks into something new and possibly functional
It's not all roses, though. There are some things that just don't translate, particularly the tactile experience
Additionally, each puzzle gives you a limited set (both type and quantity) of bricks to use. While I understand that this is how the game handles puzzle difficulty and complexity, I often found myself wishing for some generic 1x2, 1x4, and 2x2 bricks and plates just to make things look a little less ugly
One nice touch that I'm glad was included were Lego's own rules for what constitutes a "legal" connection or structure. If your builds keep falling over when you simulate them, referring to these can help you fix the issue
There's also some collectibles to grab, but they aren't all that difficult to find if you're thorough in your exploration. I managed to find them all and net 100% completion, so a replay isn't in the cards

Overall Impressions & Performance

Capturing the wind

It's hard to truly capture the experience of assembling Lego. The feeling of the smooth plastic and sharp corners on your fingertips, the clinking and clicking of the hard plastic pieces, the crinkling of all the little cellophane (now paper) bags: a game just can't replicate them
I still feel like the core of a more interesting game is here, but the failure to evolve the building mechanics (everything is brick-on-stud; no clips, rods, hinges, or gears) makes things get stale fast
Including more complex techniques would allow more interesting, less static builds and solutions. It would also enable more interesting puzzles
The game doesn't have insane requirements, so you can run it on most hardware. It ran well on the Steam Deck, but trust me, using a mouse is way easier than the trackpads

Final Verdict

- 4.0/10. The central concept of a Lego puzzle game is a good idea, but the low complexity builds and failure to evolve the puzzle mechanics made this one a bit of a slog. Hard game to recommend to any but the biggest Lego fans

Specifically this is a review for the steam deck experience.
This game does NOT play well with the controller at all. It's beyond frustrating, clunky and while I appreciate it having that option, playing the demo with a mouse and keyboard was leagues better.
I would not recommend this if you plan to play it with a controller.

I'll have to play it on my pc later to see about the entire game, but on steam deck this game was unpleasant as hell. (also the tiny font didn't help anything, the button prompts on deck are beyond tiny)

lots of fun! :]
many hours of game play
slightly repetitive at times, but exploring the different worlds made that less boring than it could've been
certainly aimed at kids, tho imo some puzzles and builds might be too hard, especially for younger kids

overall, lots of opportunities for fun, creative problem solving, and decorating and designing cool builds

kinda janky movement and there's A LOT of annoying dialogue that breaks gameplay flow, but overall it's a nice, chill experience

I actually really like this game! I wasn't sure it would be for me, but I really like the adventure and puzzling aspects. It's thoroughly entertaining and attainable for all ages.
