Understand that this is basically just the AI RPG from Perchance[perchance.org] run through a better UI. It even pulls from the same name lists, which is kind of a giveaway. However, that doesn't mean it's bad. I mean, this is a positive review after all.

The problem with the source material is, as with all LLM based RPGs, while they are good at telling stories, they are terrible at things like tracking stats, abilities, locations, NPCs, NPC locations, statuses, etc. In fact most can't even do it all and those that claim to (via "memories" or "lore") are not exactly reliable.

This is where AI Roguelite comes in. It's basically a solid framework of systems and functional stats, able to track locations, NPC locations, statuses, inventory, etc and uses that to force the LLM to actually follow the some semblance of a rules structure instead of just yoinking random stuff out of its digital butt. It forces the LLM to pay attention to things like dice rolls and skill checks and whether or not a NPC is in the same room as you or another planet.

I've played that Perchance AI RPG for a long time and have composed a laundry list of gripes about it and, ironically, this game is basically an attempt to fix all of those gripes. I can leave a follower someplace and not have them teleport to my location just to make a comment or be annoying. I can leave an item in a location and have it remember where it is. It can make actual skill checks and I can actually fail them. If I am in a fight it will remember how many opponents there are and what their status is. Ironically, I've even told people who work in AI for games that their best bet is to try to marry two different systems together: One based on solid rules and letting the LLM just handling the story fluff. It seems like this is exactly what AI Roguelite is trying to do.

Now that being said, understand that this game is definitely a work in progress. I wouldn't condemn it to the "Early access in denial" category because it is functional as it is. However, functional is far from ideal. There are bugs. There are mechanics that don't work as they should all the time. There are things that still don't make sense, or at least need a lot more work done to them. But keep in mind as I say this that AI tech itself is still a work in progress. In other words, this game is built around tools that are themselves evolving as we speak. So things are inevitably going to be a tad wonky.

Still, I'll take a tad wonky over the unhinged frustration that most AI RPG systems end up causing as they teleport crap around, forget things that happened five minutes ago, have you run into the same five characters in a loop and can't come up with a single quest idea that doesn't involve magic crystals even when in a frikkin' cyberpunk game setting.

Is it perfect? Far from it. Is it a major improvement over baseline generic AI RPGs? Definitely! Will it continue to improve as the rest of the AI tech sphere improves? I'm betting on yes.

Great game that uses AI to generate a full new world only for you! It might have still some bugs like NPCs characters doubling, or too much insta kills but it has really interesting mechanics giving you tons of freedom with the help of the AI. There is currently no other game out their that gives that much freedom!

Good Idea. Fun for a couple dozen hours.
