Great engine, great graphics, and that's where the list of things that are great stops.

I dunno who they wrote this game for -- if you're a fan of the original game, you're going to be flabbergasted by how Max acts and reacts to things -- like she's an entirely different person. I'm willing to get past the fact that Chloe isn't in the game (how could she be without removing the choice from the first game), but I'm soured by the fact that the new characters are bland and forgettable.

The ending being a vague cliffhanger for more games really doesn't sit well either -- this game wasn't great, you think I'm gonna buy the next one when you didn't even give me a good ending in this one no matter what choice I made? No thanks, after multiple missteps, I'm going to skip the rest of Deck Nine's attempts in this series.

This is such a difficult game to rate.

Make no mistake, there are two Life is Strange franchises: The real games by Dontnod, and the authorized fan fic Square Enix has Deck Nine churning out to wring every cent they can out of the reputation Dontnod earned. If it's not already obvious, if I had to grade both on the same curve, Deck Nine would not come out well in that comparison.

But lucky for them, there are no grades on Steam. Just a simple question: Would you recommend this game to other players? And that depends. If you're a fan of the original game hoping the return of Max Caulfield will bring a fitting continuation or some new layer of closure to the original story... You're gonna be disappointed.

But if you're a fan of cinematic narrative adventure games, and you've enjoyed the other sequels from Deck Nine in this series... This is another one. Like most of these games, it has its flaws and remains overshadowed by its namesake, but it's another reasonably solid, if thoroughly mid, entry in Deck Nine's version of this franchise.

As long as you go in expecting that, it's an enjoyable enough way to kill a weekend.
