We’re excited to launch our updated Pre-Alpha Playtest for The Signal: Stranded on Sirenis!
This version introduces our newly developed Art Direction, along with an early look at our combat systems — both key changes we’re eager to get your feedback on.

While this is still a work in progress, it’s a focused step toward refining the game’s core experience!

The Signal: Stranded on Sirenis is a single-player survival craft game set on a captivating alien planet that doesn’t want to let you go. You’ll scavenge, build, extract, and survive your way through a strange, sentient world — uncovering its purpose one step at a time. We have big plans for the story, but that’s not the focus just yet.

What’s New in This Build🧭

This Pre-Alpha Playtest gives you a focused look at some key systems and design updates. While it's not the full game, there’s still plenty to dive into. This playtest does not represent the full experience, but rather, is focused on gathering feedback on our recently developed systems.

Art & Atmosphere

Debut of our new art direction, which defines the visual tone of the game moving forward.

Combat & Progression

A first pass of our combat system, designed to mix both survival and FPS elements.
A very early skill tree prototype to experiment with player playstyle direction.

Survival & Exploration

Core survival systems like scavenging, crafting, building, and resource gathering are in place.

The playable region is a small slice of the Overworld, featuring cliffs, ruins, chasms, waterfalls, alien creatures (both docile and aggressive), and robotic sentries.
Dedicated players can unlock a vehicle, with a sneak peek at our customization system.

Playtime

Estimated playtime: around 2 hours for skilled players — depending on deaths, exploration choices, and optional crafting.

June Dev Update!

Hi everyone,

Over the past month, we’ve been focused on improving the core combat experience in The Signal, especially around how it feels to move and shoot in first-person.

Why We're Making Changes

The Signal is a narrative-driven game set on an alien planet. Our original vision leaned heavily into puzzle-solving to supplement the environmental storytelling and to support the unfolding mystery of the world. However, after multiple playtests, we realized that the slower gameplay rhythm was detracting from the overall experience, and pulling focus away from the story.

The feedback was clear: a snappier, more reactive moment-to-moment experience would better support player immersion and pacing.

What We've Changed

To support this shift, we’ve made major updates:

Redesigned the animation system to support a more responsive feel.
Moved to a more data-driven system for scalability and easier iteration.
Reworked enemy AI to add more variety and personality to encounters.
Improved terrain navigation and shooting feel to make first-person gameplay more satisfying.

All of this ties into our renewed focus on making each encounter more dynamic and meaningful.

World Structure Rework

Throughout our playtests, we also tried several different world structures. The version that resonated most with playtesters—and our team—is one that centers around a single hub area. You’ll build your base here and head out on expeditions from this central location. This setup not only fits our gameplay better, it also aligns more closely with our story direction.
With the world structure design locked in, we finally started working on level design that we intend to carry into the final game. We can’t wait to test this out with players.

What’s Next?

We're continuing to polish combat and improve overall aesthetics. Our goal is to put together a playable slice that brings everything together for another round of playtesting.

We're Revamping our Vehicles!

Hello explorers,

It’s been a while since our last proper update—a long while, in fact! We’ve been laser focused on our work behind the scenes, and today we’d like to share what we’ve been up to!

🧭 The Road So Far

We kicked off the year by reviewing all the feedback from our Winter Holiday playtest. Your insights helped shape our design direction, and we’ve been iterating on both your feedback and our internal vision for the game.

The first few months were about laying a new foundation. We expanded the team with new members and interns, which allowed us to form focused strike teams: Combat, Build/Craft, UI, and Level Design. This new structure is helping us move faster and more intentionally.
But scaling up wasn’t just about adding people—it was about cleaning up. We removed all placeholders, transitioning away from using any store-bought prototyping assets, and doubled down on reinforcing our art direction. Every asset now reflects our style and should run efficiently on a wide range of machines.

⚙️ Under the Hood: Unreal Engine 5.5 & System Refactors

We also dove into code refactors and upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.5 the very day it dropped. Among the biggest technical changes was integrating the Gameplay Ability System, which will make our combat and action systems far easier to iterate on. To do this, we had to go in and modify ALL of our existing features, so it was a lot of work! It will be worth it, though.

🚗 Vehicles Are Back—and Better Than Ever

After the engine upgrade, we moved our focus to vehicles. If you remember our May 2024 playtest, you might recall the early version of our Custom Vehicle system. We ended up pulling it from the last two tests—not because we abandoned it, but because we wanted to integrate your feedback into the customization feature. Our customization flow had too many steps, and needed to be streamlined.

We were looking into different technological approaches for our design, and with UE5.5’s release, the moment finally arrived.

Here’s what’s new:

Chaos Modular Vehicle Plugin: We moved from Chaos Vehicles to Chaos Modular Vehicles—an experimental but promising solution that has the added benefit of drastically improving physics stability. No more flipping out (literally).

Garage Overhaul: We’ve shifted vehicle customization from the Workshop to a dedicated Garage, complete with a streamlined building flow. Parts now snap together more cleanly, creating more intuitive and rewarding vehicle crafting.

Improved Terrain Handling: Our new suspension system hugs terrain more precisely than ever, making driving across rugged alien landscapes feel smooth and responsive.

🚀 Why Vehicles Matter in The Signal

Vehicles aren’t just a side feature—they’re central to your journey. You build them as part of your crafting loop, then use them during extraction runs to haul back valuable resources. They need to feel powerful, reliable, and worth the effort—and we’re committed to making sure they do.

We’re excited to let players try out the new vehicle system soon. But before that, we’re polishing up a few final pieces. Expect more concrete news in the weeks ahead.
