It’s been a while since our last proper update—a long while, in fact! We’ve been laser focused on our work behind the scenes, and today we’d like to share what we’ve been up to!


We kicked off the year by reviewing all the feedback from our Winter Holiday playtest. Your insights helped shape our design direction, and we’ve been iterating on both your feedback and our internal vision for the game.

The first few months were about laying a new foundation. We expanded the team with new members and interns, which allowed us to form focused strike teams: Combat, Build/Craft, UI, and Level Design. This new structure is helping us move faster and more intentionally.
But scaling up wasn’t just about adding people—it was about cleaning up. We removed all placeholders, transitioning away from using any store-bought prototyping assets, and doubled down on reinforcing our art direction. Every asset now reflects our style and should run efficiently on a wide range of machines.


We also dove into code refactors and upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.5 the very day it dropped. Among the biggest technical changes was integrating the Gameplay Ability System, which will make our combat and action systems far easier to iterate on. To do this, we had to go in and modify ALL of our existing features, so it was a lot of work! It will be worth it, though.


After the engine upgrade, we moved our focus to vehicles. If you remember our May 2024 playtest, you might recall the early version of our Custom Vehicle system. We ended up pulling it from the last two tests—not because we abandoned it, but because we wanted to integrate your feedback into the customization feature. Our customization flow had too many steps, and needed to be streamlined.

We were looking into different technological approaches for our design, and with UE5.5’s release, the moment finally arrived.


Chaos Modular Vehicle Plugin: We moved from Chaos Vehicles to Chaos Modular Vehicles—an experimental but promising solution that has the added benefit of drastically improving physics stability. No more flipping out (literally).


Garage Overhaul: We’ve shifted vehicle customization from the Workshop to a dedicated Garage, complete with a streamlined building flow. Parts now snap together more cleanly, creating more intuitive and rewarding vehicle crafting.


Improved Terrain Handling: Our new suspension system hugs terrain more precisely than ever, making driving across rugged alien landscapes feel smooth and responsive.



Vehicles aren’t just a side feature—they’re central to your journey. You build them as part of your crafting loop, then use them during extraction runs to haul back valuable resources. They need to feel powerful, reliable, and worth the effort—and we’re committed to making sure they do.


We’re excited to let players try out the new vehicle system soon. But before that, we’re polishing up a few final pieces. Expect more concrete news in the weeks ahead.

Instead of closing our playtest last week, we are taking things one step further and opening it to a wider audience. Starting Thursday 19 December 2024 we'll be admitting 1,000 new players who have requested playtest access -- these people will receive emails that the playtest is open.

But maybe you tried the playtest previously at some point? If you did then YOU TOO will have access to the playtest, you just won't receive an email. Steam is weird that way. The playtest will also be available to Discord community members who have access and/or who claim a key.

We are going to leave this playtest open until Monday 6 January 2025. Hopefully follks will have some time to test out the new build over the holidays.

This is our gift to you! And all we ask in return is for you to complete our FEEDBACK FORM[forms.gle]! Whether you played for 5 hours or rage quit afer 10 minutes -- we absolutely want to hear about your experience. It is extremely valuable feedback and truly will help us decide what to work on next.

This is an early Pre-Alpha build, and you may experience bugs, crashes, or performance issues. It's a work in progress but we feel like there's a good experience in there and we hope you will get something out of it.

Please note that this build has a Save System, so you don't need to complete the playthrough in one sitting. Since we will most likely be changing many more things between now and the next playtest/demo, your save will NOT carry over beyond this playtest.

We're launching a new Prealpha Playtest TOMORROW (Friday December 13, 2024) morning, at 10am EST. The plyatest will run until Tuesday morning, 10am EST.

There's so much new stuff in here, I won't ruin the surprise by listing it in bullet point format.
We've gone into uncharted territory on some of our design choices and have a few features that definitely require some more iteration on the tech side, so there may be some bugs, but we believe the experience should be smooth enough to gather some good feedback.

There is also some content that's still in early stages, so some things are not fully realized, but we felt that including these would help flesh out our vision more, and give you a better sense of the direction we're heading in.

The build DOES have a save feature, since the playtest is too long to fit into one session for some people. The save/load system should also help in case you encounter bugs, but save/load sometimes also introduces some additional minor bugs. We don't have a dedicated QA team, but we think we've covered most of the really bad ones. If you encounter bugs, please feel free to let us know about them in the 'submit-bug-report' section of the Playtesting Discord channel.

This playtest is CLOSED and EXCLUSIVE to the Discord Community[discord.gg]. If you like what you see, invite your friends to the Discord so they can take part in this journey, too!

We do hope to eventually re-open the playtest to more players (ones that sign up via Steam), but that depends on the early feedback we get from people in here.

We're honoured to be taking part in Midgard's Zero Carbon Quest Steam event, happening December 9 through 16 2024. We have been working with the fine folks at Midgard to have the development of THE SIGNAL asessed for it's carbon impact. We've been tracking the data and once the game is released will receive a rating[www.midgard.earth] based on our usage.

Normally this sort of ESG stuff is reserved for the ultra-corporate suits and AAAs, but we feel it's relevant to our work. In THE SIGNAL you interact with a planet that has a mind of it's own -- it's governed by a self-sustaining ecosystem that extends beyond ecology and into its own consciousness. We don't want to give away too much, so we'll just leave you with the idea that systems are important. Everything is connected -- so why not bring that theme back out into the real world?

We're lucky to be based in a province (Quebec) where the majority of our power consumption comes from hydroelectric energy, and we mostly work from home so nobody's burning fuel driving around all day for their job. But that doesn't eliminate other activities: there's travel for events and showcasing, there's travel for team meet-ups. There are always things to consider!

That's where Midgard comes in! They have the power to... track our power usage!

Why are we doing a Kickstarter? We're excited to deliver on our vision for The Signal, but the reality of making games in this economy has challenges. A lot of challenges. Due to things being weird, we think self-funding is the right path to get this game in your hands!

We've already come a long way in the process, and are nearing the final stretches of feature development. With your help, we'll be able to do more to ensure The Signal reaches its full potential. Your support will help us add more accessibility options, more languages, more voice acting, more music, and more art. The extra support will allow us to conduct more playtests and iterate more, so that we can launch a game that has been crafted together with your input.

We're honoured to be officially selected as part of Yogscast Games' 2024 edition of the Tiny Teams Festival, which will run from August 8-15.

This week-long event is all about celebrating games made by solo developers and micro-studios.

We've provided creators with access to our last playtest build, so it's a great chance for anyone that has missed our previous playtests to catch up on some of the concepts we've been experimenting with, while also learning about other games made by similarly-sized teams. We will share details about the event as they come in!

It’s been a busy period for the Goose Byte team as we have been madly responding to the feedback in our Discord (thank you everyone) and rapidly adding new features.

We’ve only got a few more days to go until the playtest is over, at 9AM EDT on Thursday 6th June we’ll be taking the playtest offline so if you haven’t already strapped on your helmet, crafted your hoverbike, and scanned some creatures, time is running out!

We’ve got big planet-sized plans for THE SIGNAL and we want to hear your voice! Pushing the boundaries of what we’re making is so important to us so please don’t be afraid to spread the word and help test the limits of what’s possible (and please don't forget to wishlist if you like what you see)!


We’ve so far had over 4,900 playtesters testing out the new capsule mechanic and diving into our hand-crafted world during this playtest and we’d love to break the 5,000 barrier mark! Please spread the word, share the game with anyone you think would get a kick out of our crafting and exploration mechanics, and join the Discord if you haven’t already (link at the bottom of this email).

Dear Explorers,

We’re so pleased to announce the new playtest is ready to go and waiting for you to jump in. For the next 2 weeks we’ll be gathering feedback on our latest focus, capsules, as well as some other new mechanics and features across the game. We're still early in development and as such, we're so excited to have you, the community, on board for the journey helping guide the direction of THE SIGNAL through regular playtests, so don't be afraid to give feedback wherever you can - on Steam, Discord or elsewhere, as it all makes a huge difference. Read on for a look at some of the key additions as well as an overview of all of the new content being added!

Take your inventions on the go! Instantly deploy your stored inventions with a simple toss - equipment, structures and even vehicles can be carried with you on your expedition! Capsules are a super interesting concept for us, because we think they’ll bridge the gap between typically distinct game loops. We’re looking to blur the lines between traversal, combat, and crafting loops by tossing (pardon the pun!) these into the mix.

The number one piece of feedback we received after our first playtest was “Mouse & Keyboard!” – so our Design team spent some time on this and got a first playable version in! Let us know how it's working for you once you've had a chance to test it out.

We swapped out all of our hard-coded text, so that we can support more languages! You can find the new options for this playtest on the Steam page and they include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Spanish, and more! We will be gradually adding more over the coming playtests. Currently the localization in-game is somewhat placeholder and we'd love to work with the community as we grow to ensure it's in as strong a place as possible as we progress through to launch!

• Removed Oxygen - Don’t fret! Oxygen will come back when we have more time to fix it!
  
• Precise Build Mode - Now only available when the player is within the Network.
  
• New Vehicle Chassis & Options - Ditch the car, and take off on a bike instead! Wheel and Hover options are available
  
• Ping Scan - Explorers have a brand new system to help locate crucial resources and other points of interest.
  
• New Points of Interest – our Art team suggested some cool new structures to explore, linked to the Dead Explorer objective. We’re not going to say more than that… you have to play to find out.
  
• Barrier Fragment - Dare we call it a “BEARIER”? If a bear or other creature tries to chomp your face off, we’re developing a sort of energy fence that can contain them long enough to let you scan or interact with them.

• UI/UX changes for the Multitool - We rearranged the multitool options and icons; This will continue to be iterated on as we add new features to the game.
  
• Reworked HUD - We moved the health bar and Network indicator to the top-left, and added Capsule inventory in the bottom right.
  
• Improved surface snapping in Workshop and Build Mode - Playtesters asked for this, so we delivered it! Hopefully way less annoying gaps between the things you build and where you want to place them on.

• Draft Naming - Another huge request! Now you can name your drafts so you know what’s what. We haven’t set this up to work well with a controller yet, but it’s on our roadmap.
  
• Improved vehicle handling/driving (they should flip less) - Some people might prefer when they flip more. Let us know what you think!
  
• New Objective flow – Our last playtest really held your hand through a set of objectives. The intention was that we wanted to onboard the player as fast as possible to a complex and totally custom crafting workshop system. But as a playtest it also over-structured the first time user experience and limited what the player could mess around with. So now we’ve replaced most of that with a “discovery mission” – scan and learn about this biome, get to messing about whenever you want!
  
• Dead Explorer narrative mission – find out what happened to the previous expedition but be careful! Voiced by Jeremiah Costello who was casting director on Game of Thrones (video game) and has voiced characters in Dead Synchronicity, Pineview Drive and Husk.
  
• An easter egg from a different sci fi universe 👀
  
• Toxic Gas is on longer linked to Alien Junk - Gases come from gas vents, and can be extracted with the right tool. Removing Alien junk still helps the ecofootprint score, but we have bigger plans for this for a later update.
  
• Reminder: Invented drafts from past game sessions can be ‘uploaded’ and reused in a new session via a cheat. We don’t have a save system implemented yet, but this is a shortcut to get access to your inventions again if you experience a crash or interruption in your play session!
  
• Added useful links in the Main Menu - you can now provide playtest feedback from there, and can also sign up for our newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest developments.
  
• Ecofootprint system modifications - Fewer player actions upset the ecosystem.
  
• Character run speed slowed down.
  
• Time of day speed slowed down.
  
• And of course various crash and bug fixes along the way.

We're officially closing our FIRST PRE-ALPHA PLAYTEST for The Signal!

Thank you so much to each and every one of you for your support and time. If you haven't already filled out this feedback form[forms.gle] or written something on our Discord, please do!

Otherwise, we wanted to say, that this has been an amazing opportunity for us, and we will have some more playtesting and the Signal updates for you in the near future. We initially started by looking for 15-20 people and ended up having 1000+ sign-ups. This has been incredible, and we hope you'll all stick around to see what comes next! Speaking of, we intend to have another playtest sometime next month and we will be reviewing a lot of your feedback to see if we can implement it into the feedback for the playtest after that one.
