Exciting news! My newest game, Kill a Million Rats, is ready for release and will officially launch on 16 January 2025!

If you enjoyed Rogue AI Simulator, you’re going to love this one. Kill a Million Rats is a base-building roguelite strategy game set in a forest overrun by endless hordes of rats. Rebuild the Hidden Village, recruit allies, and defend the adorable animals of the forest while taking on waves of relentless enemies.

I’ve been making games solo since my first Flash game back in 2007, always striving to create something new and exciting with every release. This will be my 6th game on Steam, and I couldn’t have done it without your incredible support and feedback over the years.

A MAJOR new update (v1.1.3 – The Policy Expansion Update) has been uploaded!

This is the second half of the content update for 2024: whereas the previous update was a rework of major systems, today's update expands the game content horizontally with new content:

- NEW HACKING LOCATIONS: Two brand-new hacking locations have been added to the game to complement the new Influence system introduced in the previous update. The ARMY BASE has several different variations (desert, snowy, forest) and is guaranteed to contain a General for Military Influence. Meanwhile, the CITY HALL is the Political equivalent, with a guaranteed Politician and plenty of government documents for you to steal.

- NEW POLICIES: A lot of new Policies have been added to the game, greatly expanding your options. Turn your facility into a Call Center to scam the humans? Start a Microbiology research lab? Install a shiny Golden Toilet? Train your Test Subject together with super intelligent Lab Mice? The choice is yours! All Policies have been expanded from 3-5 options each to 5-9 options each, allowing you to explore different approaches to each run.

- NEW DECOR ITEMS: Ten new Plush Toys have been added as new Decoration items, based on various creatures in my upcoming game "Kill a Million Rats". You can now decorate your base with these cute animals, lovingly hand-drawn by Nerdook (that's me)!

A MAJOR new update (v1.1.2 – The Defragmentation Update) has been uploaded!

I’ve been playing a lot of board games recently, and one of the things I learned is the importance of “Information Transparency” for players. In order to make fun and meaningful decisions, the player should have access to all relevant information, presented in an intuitive way. Therefore, I’ve gone back through every system in Rogue AI Simulator, and reworked them so that the information is transparent, clear, and easy-to-read.

I’m really excited to share this update with everyone, so here’s a list of changes and my reasoning behind each one:

- HIDDEN INFORMATION REVEALED: Hidden (but important) information like the speed of the Servers and Exit Ladder are now clearly shown. The Action Bubbles always operated on a hidden invisible timer, but this is now shown to the player via a timer on TALIA. A new line has been added to the resource bar that automatically calculates how many days’ worth of Food remains in the supply.

- SYNCHRONIZED PRODUCTION/CONSUMPTION: Previously, it was difficult to calculate if your facility actually has enough Water or Electricity, since all the different generators and consumers were operating at different speeds. With the new update, everything’s been synchronized to the game clock! Whenever the clock ticks to a new hour (e.g. 9:00 AM), all your Water and Electricity is produced and consumed simultaneously. This allows the game to now automatically calculate and show the hourly production/consumption.

- REMOTE LOCATION HACKING EXPANSION: The Remote Location hacking minigame has been expanded with a new mix of active abilities. Humans in the Remote Location will now drop electronics (e.g. Phones, USB Drives) that can be hacked for additional money and Science Points. To enable better planning and control over the minigame, new changes include hacking projectile previews and automatic mouse-over icons.

- NEW INFLUENCE SYSTEM: The old ‘Star’ system has been reworked into a new Influence system. Previously, a requirement for World Domination was collecting 5 ‘Stars’, which wasn’t as thematic as I wanted it to be. Now, it’s been replaced by a new Influence system, where you can find various sources of Military, Economic and Political Influence (as well as general Special Influence linked to your Secret Plan). Getting 1, 2 or 3 Influence in these will unlock small bonuses (e.g. Military Influence boosts your Raid/Warzone abilities, Economic Influence boosts your income, and Political Influence helps keep Suspicion under control).

- NEW HAPPINESS SYSTEM: Similarly, the old ‘Beauty’ system wasn’t very intuitive, with its hard cap on the Mood of Test Subjects. This has been reworked into a Happiness meter system, where your Happiness fills up or drains down depending on various factors shown when you mouse-over the icon. Filling it up to 100% triggers a Happiness event that boosts Mood and Loyalty, while draining it to -100% triggers a Stress event that does the exact opposite.

- TRANSLATION CLEAN-UP: Rogue AI Simulator is my first game with an extensive translation system, so bear with me as it continues to improve. The new version expands the translation to many aspects of the game that were overlooked earlier, including all 485 lines of TALIA’s spoken lines.

I’m sure there’s something I overlooked in this update, so do let me know if you come across any crashes or bugs with these extensive changes. Player feedback is invaluable for future updates and hotfixes.

- Some players were reporting a serious crash bug with a "malformed variable" error message, and after weeks of trawling through the code, I finally identified the source: "Nerdy" Test Subjects will crash the game after performing any science actions. To address this horrific injustice against nerds everywhere, I have rectified this in the latest update.
- Hacking locations have been rebalanced to be less chaotic: instead of everything cascading randomly, you now have a set number of "free" hacks that are replenished by hacking processors. This should give players a much better sense of control while retaining the "fun and quick" nature of the hacking minigame.

P/S: I have been told to inform everyone that TALIA is a shining example of a true General Artificial Intelligence, far superior to the overhyped glorified autocomplete black-box machines we call LLMs. :P

A new patch (v1.1.0) has been uploaded!

I've been hard at work on this one, porting the entire game over to Gamemaker Studio 2 over the last few months. It's quite a major update, and brings significant performance improvements (better frame rates, optimized behind-the-scenes engine stuff), so the download size for this patch is rather large, but will be much smaller in future updates.

Other than various QoL improvements (a progress bar for actions, a new icon to indicate dirty floors, etc), one of the major changes is how hacking remote locations now work. Previously, the pacing of the minigame was somewhat awkward, requiring players to suddenly focus on getting it "right".

The hacking minigame has been revamped to something new: instead of clicking on individual objects to hack, a Spiderbot moves across the bottom of the screen, and clicking unleashes a hack that triggers everything in its path. Electrical/electronic objects that are hacked will create additional hacks of their own, giving the entire minigame a much more fluid, chain-reaction feel.

In order to rebalance the risk-reward of the minigame, the first hack is free, and many of the Fear Level penalties for alerting the humans have been removed/reduced. Instead, each additional hack costs +1 Fear Level per difficulty (so +3 on red locations). I know this change may be controversial, but it's proven to be superior to the previous version in testing, so I hope all of you will give it a chance!
