Roadmap for Evil's Den is out!

Greetings, fellow crusaders!

I'm thrilled to unveil our official roadmap for the game, outlining our journey through the next three milestones. These include the eagerly awaited 0.2 release, signifying our triumphant return to Steam, followed by the anticipated 0.3 Spring update, promising significant enhancements to gameplay. And let's not forget about the exciting prospects of the 0.4 Summer update, poised to elevate the experience even further!

But before we delve into the details, let's address the elephant in the room...

Yet another delay?

It's been some time since our last update, and we understand that an explanation is due. Currently, our game isn't generating any income, meaning that every development effort incurs expenses that we must address. To sustain our operations, our company — Overbuilt, has taken on contract work unrelated to game development. Given our limited capacity, we've had to prioritize this external work over our game development, resulting in delays.

Once our game returns to Steam, we don't anticipate significant profits, particularly in its current state. Nevertheless, we're hopeful that the revenue generated will help alleviate further delays in development.

Now back to the main topic...

v0.3 — Spring “Castle” Update

Castle biome overhaul, including reworked enemies, rooms, bosses, and other related content
Reworked enemy mechanics and their AI systems, making combat more interesting
Revamp of the random generator responsible for creating dungeons
Official support for Linux

v0.4 — Summer “Village” Update

New biome alongside new types of enemies and unique bosses
Combat system overhaul, including revamp of weapons, abilities, spells, items, and potions
Village revamp, including new environment and interactions
New types of rooms, including puzzle rooms and gauntlets

Now, I'd like to elaborate briefly on each of the aforementioned milestones...

What’s the current status of v0.2?

As I compose this message, I'm reviewing our project management tool, and it appears that the vast majority of tasks for the 0.2 release are already completed. The remaining incomplete tasks primarily pertain to our new UI system and controller support. Additionally, we still need to address a few bugs, mainly concerning combat, Steam achievements, and some visual glitches. Overall, it's fair to say that version 0.2 is nearing completion.

As mentioned in one of our devlogs, while 0.2 will introduce some noticeable changes, it may not be as groundbreaking as one might expect from a major version release. We anticipate saving the most significant updates for version 0.3, scheduled for release sometime in the spring.

What's in store for the upcoming v0.3 update?

The Spring update, affectionately dubbed the “Castle update” by yours truly, marks the game's first significant overhaul, promising substantial changes to the gameplay experience. We're embarking on a complete revamp of our dungeon generator, accompanied by a massive overhaul of our inaugural biome — the castle. Expect an array of new room variations and special landmarks to enhance navigation, alleviating the sensation of repetitive exploration.

But it's not merely a visual makeover; the update will also breathe new life into the castle's denizens, with revamped enemies. In v0.3, enemies within the castle will undergo a transformation, becoming more distinct and aligned with the castle's ambiance. Moreover, we're revisiting the AI mechanics governing enemy behavior, enhancing interactivity with players. Enemies will dynamically react to your attacks, adjust their assault patterns based on your defensive stance, and exhibit heightened awareness of your actions.

Beyond the Castle's “renovation” and improvements to the Dungeon Generator and AI, we're committed to extending support to Linux platforms, although specifics regarding distributions are yet to be determined.

What might we expect in Summer Update 0.4?

Our summer update will address areas overlooked in 0.3, focusing on further fixes and enhancements. A standout visual transformation awaits as we embark on a full-scale revamp of our Village, infusing it with character and vibrancy to elevate its visual appeal and vitality.

Noteworthy among the changes is a comprehensive overhaul of the combat system, introducing a plethora of new weapons and abilities. These additions will unlock a multitude of play styles, each with its own distinctive dynamics and play style challenges.

Furthermore, you can anticipate the unveiling of a new biome, offering fresh locales and adversaries, seamlessly continuing the player's journey beyond the Castle biome. To inject excitement, the update will introduce novel room types for both the new biome and the castle. Enter puzzle rooms, demanding creative solutions, and gauntlets, testing your reflexes. To maintain flexibility, a new system will ensure these rooms remain optional, providing alternative routes or making their completion entirely discretionary, thus preserving the game's progression flow.
What comes after the 0.4 release? Will there be a 0.5?
Absolutely, there will be a 0.5 release. Our current strategy involves delivering substantial updates on a quarterly basis, ensuring the game receives four major updates per year, each incrementing the version number by +0.1 until reaching the full release at 1.0. Following this plan, you can anticipate updates to unfold as follows:|

0.2 — Winter 2024
0.3 — Spring 2024
0.4 — Summer 2024
0.5 — Fall 2024
0.6 — Winter 2025
0.7 — Spring 2025
0.8 — Summer 2025
0.9 — Fall 2025
1.0 -— Winter 2026

However, it's important to note that if we successfully implement our desired changes for each milestone ahead of schedule, we intend to release the update sooner rather than adhere strictly to the deadlines.

Will the game pricing change with the updates?

Indeed, our plan involves gradually increasing the game's price with each major update until we reach our final pricing with version 1.0. However, there's an exception: version 0.2, which signifies our return to Steam, will not include any price hikes. This means that upon our return, the game's price will likely be at its lowest point, which we consider a fair decision given that this version will also represent the game in its least finished state.

Dev Log #3: Development continues as we introduce community translation project

Greetings in our first devlog for 2024!

We hope that you had a splendid Christmas and New Year's Eve celebration. We certainly did!

After a somewhat lazy start to the month, we're now back in full swing with our development efforts. As highlighted in earlier devlogs, our primary focus remains on enhancing the combat flow, introducing fresh UI layouts with comprehensive game controller support, and refining the artificial intelligence of our in-game enemies.

Initially, I had planned to share a brief video featuring a before-and-after comparison of our progress. However, I decided to shelve that idea temporarily. The current version under development is grappling with glaring issues related to lighting and the rendering of weapons. Perhaps I’ll showcase these improvements in the next devlog once these technical hurdles are fixed.

While our programming team is immersed in their assignments, I've been delving into research for our localization implementation, exploring our options for potential improvements. Drawing upon my past experience as a translator in community projects for various games, I've decided to give it a try and create a community translation project for Evil’s Den. Currently, it includes strings related to the Steam store, but in the coming days I’ll expand it to include in-game strings soon.

Dev Log #2: Evil's Den returns in January 2024

Hi! Apologies for the delay in dropping this devlog – meant to hit you up on Friday, but we had a crucial meeting today, and I wanted to make sure I had all the juicy details to share.

So, heads up first: we've decided to push back our Steam comeback to the first weeks of next year. Why the change? Well, we're diving into the holiday spirit, and we want to spare everyone the crunch during this festive season. Plus, the whole office will be off on holiday break soon, so would leave the game unattended right after our big comeback, which is not ideal. We would like to make sure we're around to keep things smooth and address any issues right from the get-go.

Now, let's get to the good stuff – we've revamped our character movement system with a serious upgrade, providing it with more fluidity and momentum. This ensures that your actions look more natural and dynamic. We've also begun working on improving enemy movements and reactions, but this involves more intricate adjustments tied to the AI system, requiring a bit more time. Honestly, our previous AI system was a real headache—it turned out to be one of those assets that just didn't play nice. Long story short, we decided to hit the reset button and rebuild the whole thing from scratch. This removal of premade assets and replacing it with our custom system will be quite a recurring theme in upcoming updates, which I’ve mentioned in more detail in our previous devlog.

Since we've decided to move our return to Steam from before Christmas to after new year, you can expect the abovementioned changes to be part of our upcoming update as well. Meaning that our update won't be as “empty” as I've described previously in our last post.

Once the abovementioned things are implemented, we're going to redesign our very first boss fight, so it actually feels like a proper boss fight, rather than just a glorified elite mob. Whether this change happens in an upcoming update or the next one is yet to be seen, but I would personally suspect the latter.

Because of the upcoming Christmas break, I would also like to inform that there will be no more devlogs this year. It will come back next year, probably around January 5th (friday). By then, you can expect me to show up with more concrete dates for our Steam return and overall more details regarding our comeback.

Dev Log #1: Evil's Den: Forsaken Game?

Tiritto here, your freshly appointed Game Designer and Community Manager for “Evil's Den: Forsaken Dungeon”, and I welcome you to our first Dev Log! First off, massive shoutout to each one of you reading this in the first place. Whether you already own the game or you’re someone new stumbling into the den. Your interest and support mean the world to us.

Now, let's dive into the real talk.

What’s the current state of the game?

Okay, no sugar-coating – the game's current state is a mess, and I'm not here to pretend otherwise. It was pulled off Steam for a reason, and that reason is staring us in the face. The game needs some serious fixing. Combat is boring, locations are monotonous, mechanics are uninteresting and graphic design resembles an asset flip. At this point, all our negative reviews are more than deserved.

But Why?

So, why the hiccup? What happened? Life happened. Budgets got tighter than skinny jeans, and the team had to shuffle priorities, effectively putting Evil’s Den on hiatus. Let's be real, we can't work on a game if we all go broke. It was a necessary move.

Why the silence?

I wasn't yet involved in this particular project at the time, and looking back, I think the team should've been more open and honest about the situation. I understand why they didn't, especially given that none of them had any experience with communities before.

There's a prevailing fear that admitting errors could erode player confidence in the product, prompting developers to choose silence as an alternative. Paradoxically, the reality is quite different; players often interpret the silent disappearance of developers as a sign of true untrustworthiness.

That's precisely why they brought me into the fold — to bring transparency, open communication, and a fresh perspective to the team. Moving forward, you can expect a more straightforward and open dialogue about the project's progress. As part of this commitment, I intend to provide bi-weekly dev logs to keep our community in the loop about our development efforts.

And what now?

We're currently working on an update to align with the game's return to Steam. Yet, I'd like to set the stage from the beginning — don't expect significant gameplay changes with this upcoming update. To understand why, let me delve into the purpose behind this particular update.

Early on in development, we made some rookie mistakes deeply embedded in our game code. The initial intention was to streamline the development process by leveraging 3rd party plugins for implementing game mechanics that we wanted in our game, so we wouldn’t have to “reinvent the wheel”. As the project expanded, compatibility issues, dependency conflicts, and unsupported features in these third-party plugins became persistent challenges. What was meant to expedite our progress became a substantial hindrance, leading us to a crucial realization — we had to acknowledge the mistake and address it head-on. The only solution? Tear it all apart and implement it properly from scratch.

Enter the “empty” update. While it won't bring immediate fixes to the game, it signifies a pivotal moment in our development journey. We're discarding one of our most difficult obstacles, paving the way to achieve our ultimate goal — fixing the game and crafting an experience that's genuinely enjoyable to play.

So, nothing changes?

Short answer, yes. Long answer, not exactly. Although the upcoming update won't usher in noticeable gameplay changes, our commitment to development will reignite, and there'll be no more neglect of our community, no matter how small it might be.

As a testament to this shift, upon the game's return to Steam, which will happen before the end of this year, we'll unveil a short-term roadmap spanning the next few months. This not only gives you something to anticipate, but also provides a tangible accountability measure for us. If we ever falter in regaining your trust, it'll be plain for all to see this time around.

Furthermore, we're intensifying our engagement across community platforms like Steam Forums and our Discord Server. There, you can freely share your ideas, report bugs, or simply connect with our developers. As a community manager, I'm committed to addressing every question or concern you may have and responding to it personally. However, if your messages are in a language other than English or Polish, I may need to utilize translation tools. In such instances, I appreciate your patience with me.

What comes next?

Let's get real; the path forward isn't a leisurely stroll. It's an adventurous ride with bumps along the way. But here's the lowdown – we're committed for the long haul, and we'd love to have you join us on this expedition.

We are fully aware of our past mistakes and have proactively initiated steps to rectify each issue systematically. We aim to transform the product into an enjoyable and satisfying experience for all, ensuring that your investment, both in terms of money and time, is worthwhile.

The upcoming update marks the beginning of an extensive restoration process, commencing with a complete rewrite of the code governing our character controller (not to be confused with a game controller device). It's not merely a work in progress; it's already completed as of now. This overhaul is pivotal, setting the stage for upcoming improvements in combat flow and gameplay dynamics, which will be our next focus and fundamentally change and improve how the game feels, for the better.

We would like to inform you that after receiving feedback from our users, we have decided to temporarily suspend the sale of our Early Access game on Steam in order to fix the reported issues. We want to make sure that the game is the best it can be and satisfies our users, which is why we have decided to focus on fixing the reported problems.

We are planning to do a thorough job on revamping the character controller and inventory to improve the gameplay experience. However, to ensure the highest quality of our game, we need time to thoroughly test the new solutions. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding in this matter.
