This game starts off mildly, you begin with 4 Grey Knights and each one is a good bit stronger than any individual unit you'll run across. Around the 5 or 10 hour mark you're going to notice a power spike in enemies that, if you're not fully utilizing the game's systems, will destroy you. This is the point where you need to optimize your Knights and their builds - looking for ways to generate bonus AP (Interceptor crits, Justicar abilities, Stun -> Executions)

How long it takes you to figure this out is about how long you're going to be getting beat into the dirt - 10-20 hrs.

If you do figure out your builds, about 30 hrs in is when you should feel the power shift back to your side. Your higher leveled Grey Knights are now power houses, with a few of your roster able to solo entire pods of enemies. And it only gets more nuts from there; the last 15 hrs of this game, when you're giving Chaos Marines wedgies and taking Nurgle's lunch money, are worth all the time you spent dragging a squad of critically injured Knights back to your ship.
