what changes are made by activating hard mode? I noticed a lot more fish but just wondering if there's more

I just purchased the game and was playing my initial game. I noticed only the right joystick seem to work and only left to right movement. On the title screen pushing either control stick results in the game crashing. Not even starting the game with controller unplugged mitigates the crash. I also verified the game's contents just to make sure. Help?...
