Anvil is a massively multiplayer game where thousands of players work together to build empires, wage war, and conquer in a persistent online world. March alongside armies of players in massive melee battles and large scale sieges.

Devblog 13 - Tavern, Central Marketplace, and Major Town Changes

Tavern

One ongoing goal is to make Towns (previously called Settlements) more useful and integrated with player's core gameplay. Players should have more reasons to go into Town and moreover to interact with other players there. The Tavern is a structure inside Towns that provides an area for social activity and offers gameplay benefits as well.

Food items can be purchased at the Tavern like Bread and Pie, as well a new type of Food item: Mead. When Food or Drink is consumed at the Tavern together with others, players will receive a Rested Status which will boost Stamina regeneration rate for a period of time. The more players that are in the Tavern, the longer the Rested Status will last.

Central Marketplace

Another new Town structure is being added to facilitate trade between players more effectively. The Central Marketplace allows players to sell their items to other players. There are several key differences between the Central Marketplace and the Marketplace Shops from prior tests (which has been obsoleted and will be removed from the game).

First, items from all players in a Town are sold at the same location now meaning players looking to buy items can conveniently view and buy goods from one central location. Second, players selling items have finer control over their Sell Orders. They can sell different batches of items at different prices and earnings from each order can be withdrawn separately. Finally, all the details of the market can be viewed from the world map screen. Information on every order, including the Seller, Quantity, and Price are all visible right from the map. Beyond the initial version of this structure, additional functionality is being developed like the ability to place down Buy Orders to be fulfilled by other players in the future.

Town Changes

Other big changes are coming to Towns and in how they interact with Homesteads. Homesteads are no longer tied to any given Town and can be built completely independent of them. That is, Homesteads can be built anywhere in the world and don't need to be built within the vicinity of a Town. After looking at player feedback and reexamining the goals of Homestead, it was decided that a more organic relationship between Homesteads and Towns would be ideal, rather than a forced one. This required a big reworking of our core Town/Homestead code but we believe this is an important foundational change for the future.

The goal is for the Tavern and Central Marketplace to help build that natural relationship between Homesteads and Towns. To further push into this, two other structures are being added to Towns. First, there is the Town Workshop, which will be the Town variant of the Workbench/Advanced Workbench. As a natural byproduct of Homestead progression, players will accumulate resources that they can refine into useful materials at the Town Workshop during their trips into Town. For example, Ash is now used as an ingredient to produce Mortar and excess Malachite is used to produce Copper Nails. Second, the Merchant no longer spawns in the world and is now a structure that is built in the Town. Players making trips into towns can use their Silver to purchase materials like Wood Planks.

Females? Women?

Looked through the screens and didn't notice any female 'characters'. This going to be a sausage fest or will there be female options to play as? People enjoy playing games as females especially, (gasp) females... it's 2024, not 1984. And if I missed the screens that show you can play as female characters, then apologies, but I dId not see any myself.

Phase 5 Major Test on April 18

MAJOR TEST - APRIL 18

The next Major Test will be happening on Thursday, April 18th at 1PM ET and will run for 4 full days. If you haven't signed up for test access and want to participate, please head to the Anvil Empires store page to sign up. Note that testers are selected at random by Steam.

This test includes all the features and changes that were developed over Phase 5 of Pre-Alpha. Below are highlights of some of the more significant changes.

HOMESTEADS

Homesteads have been added, which is a place where players can build and own their own private structures and items within a Settlement. Homesteads are owned by Families, which are player groups that can organize themselves, collaborate on building, and share assets.

Players within Families can be assigned different roles to help manage a Homestead. Families can also build a presence in the Settlement Core, which is the public area at the center of a Settlement shared among all Families. In the Settlement Core, Families can build a Family Hall to securely store large amounts of assets and a Marketplace Shop where they can sell items to other players.

WEATHER & SEASONS

The world now cycles through four seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, which each have an impact on various environmental factors such as Wetness, Temperature, and Wind. Each of these in turn can influence gameplay in a variety of ways such as farming and wind power generation.

Weather events can also occur at any time which also have an impact on the aforementioned environmental factors. There are rain storms and snow storm and the chance of each occurring is influenced by the current season. These storms can dynamically move around in the world and even collide and overlap with each other.

DIRE RAVEN

Flying animals have been added in the form of the Dire Raven. Dire Ravens roam the skies and can dive down and attack unsuspecting players.

Dire Ravens congregate around Deadwood Trees, which provide a new rarer type of wood that is used to craft more special weapons like Short Bows.

WIND MILL

Wind Mills provide a new way to produce power that works with the new seasons and weather system. The structure can be rotated by players to orient to current wind conditions since both intensity and direction have an impact on how much power is generated.

BRONZE WEAPONS

Bronze Weapons and Tools have been introduced as a new intermediate phase in equipment progression. To produce Bronze Ingots, copper and tin must be first harvested from Malachite and Cassiterite and smelted at a Furnace. Bronze Ingots can then be hammered into Bronze Blades at a Stone Anvil and then used to craft swords, axes, and other equipment at a Stone Anvil.

HEATING VAT

The Heating Vat is being introduced for processing various ingredients into materials through boiling, brewing, and melting. The Heating Vat requires water and a combustible fuel to operate.

Crude Resin can now be harvested from the world and converted into Rosin at a Heating Vat, which in turn can be used to craft equipment like shields.

Devblog 12 - Heating Vat, Resin, and Homestead Updates

Heating Vat

As part of the continuing effort to build out the crafting economy at Homesteads, the Heating Vat is being introduced for processing one or more ingredients into materials through boiling, brewing, and melting. The Heating Vat requires water and a combustible fuel like Wood Planks to operate.

Ingredients are placed into the Heating Vat and are cooked over a period of time and converted into an output item. Temperature is an important gameplay factor in the heating process. The temperature of the vat is determined by the type of combustible fuel being burned. Different recipes have different optimal temperatures. When ingredients are being heated, the closer their average temperature is to their ideal, the higher the quality of the output will be. Temperature can be boosted further by attaching Bellows, which is required to achieve the highest quality materials for certain recipes.

One of the big goals for the visuals was to have as much feedback on the state of the Heating Vat and cooking be shown through VFX as opposed to UI. The concept art below shows how the combustible fuel, water volume, cooking state, and temperature are visualized on the structure.

Crude Resin & Rosin

Crude Resin can now be harvested from special trees that spawn near Bear dens. Resin is harvested with a Knife and can be converted into Rosin, which in turn can be used to craft Shields. The Resin conversion process requires the Heating Vat.

Homestead Interiors

One of the common requests from the last few tests has been to expand the functionality of the Family Homestead structure to make it more useful (beyond it being just a requirement for a Homestead Area). In the last Minor Test, an inventory and the ability to manage Families directly from the Homestead were added. To take things even further now, an interior has also been added to the Homestead so that initial Family members can build Beds and other interior structures without having to build separate Houses. By removing the additional pre-requisite of building a separate House, the process of joining the game and starting a Homestead is further simplified.

Foxhole is dead so devs need new cash cow

Foxhole died because of bad and complicated logistic system, bad combat and clans mass reporting people to get them banned. Can't wait to see how fast this game is gonna die.

Will this game suffer as much from clans as Foxhole?

As anyone who's tried to play Foxhole will know, it's a terrible experience solo, and thanks to clans and Discord groups, your options are just cannon fodder, or maybe if you're lucky, a vehicle somebody has left unattended. Will Anvil suffer the same problems, or will steps be taken to reduce the ability of clans and Discord groups to gate resources and content from other players?...

Tester Invites Need a Rework

The dev's test invites are ridiculous. I've been a Foxhole player since War 1 and I've been looking forward to Anvil for years. I signed up for the test at the first opportunity and I still don't have an invite. Good way to treat a loyal fan.
