Can't use the item

I would like to play the game, but I struggle at the beginning. I can't put a plank in the fireplace (yes, in the living room). I tried to press 1 + mouse, I tried to hold it, but nothing happens. I pressed other nubmers and still nothing. I reinstalled the game, but it didn't help either. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
