Yakuza 4 brings a refreshing shake-up to the series, expanding the story beyond Kazuma Kiryu by introducing three additional protagonists. Returning to Kamurocho, the game not only revisits the familiar city but also expands it, allowing players to explore new vertical layers—from underground passageways to the rooftops.

Compared to Yakuza 3, this entry is a significant improvement. While Kiryu remains a compelling lead, the addition of Shun Akiyama, Taiga Saejima, and Masayoshi Tanimura injects much-needed variety into both storytelling and gameplay. Each character comes with a unique fighting style, making combat feel more diverse and engaging.

The story is intricate and filled with twists, weaving together multiple narratives that eventually converge in a satisfying way. The consistency in the series’ lore remains impressive, proving once again how well the Yakuza games build upon each other.

In terms of side content, Yakuza 4 retains many familiar mini-games and activities from previous entries. Playing through substories as different protagonists adds an extra layer of enjoyment. The Hostess Maker, though still not as deep as in Yakuza 0 or Kiwami 2, is still decent. Other side activities, such as Fighter Maker, Gang Encounters, and the Police Scanner missions, don't appeal as much to me.

I'm looking forward what Yakuza 5 brings to the table.

Yakuza 4 is kinda hard to recommend, the plot is interesting and I really like on of the new characters, but there is a bunch of negatives.

Here is what I like about the game
- I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love Akiyama, love his gameplay, backstory and personality. A 10/10 new characters, I wish there was an Akiyama gaiden
- The plot is kinda convoluted, but It is interesting
- The gameplay is a step above Y3, not as good as the Kiwami games, but not bad at all

Now the bad part
- Some parts of the game are really boring, like playing as Saejima in jail
- The game is a bit too easy, I only died once
- Playing as Saejima and Tanimura feels really bad before you get some upgrades
- The story has a lot of Yakuza cliches, many rubber bullets, enemies getting guns from the ground and backstabbers

Overall the game is ok, but there are some really dull parts

Akiyama is the best dude in fiction pretty chill wish sky finance was real and also The Heat Moves in Yakuza 4 are a highlight of the combat system! These special attacks let you unleash devastating and often cinematic moves when your Heat Gauge is filled. They're not just powerful but also incredibly stylish would recommend
