This game has a good concept, but didn't do enough to keep me coming back. The concept of each circle being its own little kingdom is certainly a solid idea, and can be quite engaging at times. However, the concept falls short the more hours are poured into the game. Hardcore gamers may enjoy the tough challenge the game may throw (including online challenges against other players), but this game fell short for my enjoyment.

Circle Empires is a challenging territory type game where players have to control lands of circles. Each circle has different resources available for the player to harvest, build, or accumulate. The game's gameplay is very straight forward using primarily mouse and some keyboard to execute commands. The player chooses through the menu what to build: units, buildings, or even upgrades are the three main choices of this menu. Some buildings included in the game are keeps, foresters, banks, and guard towers of various abilities (fire, poison, ice, etc...). Buildings help accumulate resources that are not naturally occurring in the circle such as wood. Wood is a common occurrence in most circles, but when the resource runs out the player is heavily dependent on the building to create more. On top of buildings, the player has a WIDE variety of units to choose from. Swordsmen, archers, knights, mounted archers are a few, but there is another menu that has dragons, wizards, witches, and even a kraken for water circles. Upgrades are also available as the player accumulates three main sources of "income" in the game: food, wood, and coins. Food is a funny one as the player can manually place it and grow it in the game - at the cost of wood though. The longer buildings are around (and units) the higher the chance of an upgrade occurring. This is different than the player manually upgrading from the menu; the units or buildings become better at what they do when they gain enough experience to upgrade.

The visuals and graphics are pretty cool and very suitable to the game's sort of silly environment. The choice of characters and the style in which to portray the game was done nicely. Animations aren't complex or long, but all the required movements from the sprites seem to be included. For example, the kraken can be seen moving around as well as its tenticles. The water around will sort of be a still sprite to indicate water ripples rather than a particle effect of water. Regardless it doesn't hinder the gameplay experience. The sounds and music are okay, depending on what is happening on the screen. The clinging/clanging of the swords (especially from Swordsmen) are extremely annoying - and even more annoying if there are a number of them. Generally, everything that should have some sort of noise is there, but there are some noises that are extremely more annoying than the others.

Overall, it is an okay game, but its for that reason I cannot recommend it. It has some redeeming qualities such as game types to change the dynamic slightly of the game. Some of the game types include campaign, multiplayer (PVP), endless mode, and a specific set of challenge modes (such as tower defense / wave defense and slay the king). This is a nice addition to the game as it adds a little more replayability and content. Although most of the review may seem to speak decently of the game, that's as far as it goes... it's an OK game, that's it. There is some infatuated excitement at first, but it slowly wears off as the game is sort of the same deal over and over again, regardless of map, map size, or game type. This game may appeal to a few, but I certainly cannot recommend it. Boring and mundane for me after the second hour. The multiplayer might be a point of interest for others.

Usually not a fan of RTS but this simplifies it enough and has way more than enough unlockables to keep me entertained.
