The Burton Equation - 1.1 Patch Released!

Hey all! The Burton Equation 1.1 patch is now out, which covers almost all maps of the game and features feedback amendments with current reviews in mind. Most of the changes were in the 20s, 40s, and 80s, but some fixes still came in for the HL2 era and some game-wide changes will affect that chapter too. The TL;DR for the big changes are:

A new scripted combat sequence in every map of the 20s, 40s, and 80s. Metrocops are responsible for almost all of these, doing things like ambushing the player more regularly, sentries that will trigger reinforcements, pushing explosives or props down slopes/stairs at the player, or tipping over props for slightly better cover against player attacks, with a few extras besides these. There are also two new environmental sequences, one in the 40s and one in the 80s, for observant players to switch up their approach to engaging enemies. More explosives are also present in all 40s and 80s for a change-up in how to deal with squads of cops
An attempt at improving encounter variety, both via the varied tactics above but also by introducing shield scanners and hopper mines into the 40s, and manhacks into the 80s, both with intent to stagger out the enemy introduction and reduce reliance on metrocop combat. Lots of fun interactions to be had with kicking hopper mines back at cops, or manhacks breaking through the glass panels seen in the 80s levels
A general rebalance of the game, largely mitigating enemy spam, reducing the difficulty spike of the 40s, and elevating some of the less viable weapons in the arsenal

Please note old saves will not work with this patch!

A full changelog is below, if you'd like the details! I'll do a temperature check following this update to see what's working better than before and what still needs a look over, and evaluate a 1.2 in the New Year. Thanks for your thoughts so far, and Happy New Year!

A great vision of an old great game.

I just started playing. Damn, it's fun. Okay, the face mask is really outta place. But still, it is fun imagining that you are on the streets, fighting off the old-tyme bad guys.

Possible mode idea?

Ik the game is finished n' all but i think a survival mode would be really cool for this game. You just pick your time frame, get stuck in 2-3 spots of your choice and figure out how long you can last, maybe possible trophies soon if they're ever added?? Just a general idea, yeah the game is pretty peak after all....

The Burton Equation is a fast-paced, combat-centric Half-Life 2 mod all about moving you from one arena to the next. It doesn't aspire to be the next big thing or an Episode 3 equivalent. It's an action-packed shooter with an interesting premise and a number of memorable setpieces. It doesn't overstay its welcome, but it also lasts just long enough to satisfy you.

TBE is a time-travelling adventure that starts in the 1920s and eventually reaches the dystopian future of Half-Life 2. You play as Detective Burton, a WW1 veteran and Chicago-based private investigator who receives a job to investigate the "Metro Gang," a well-armed mob who all wear gas masks. Burton barely leaves his office before the gang fires on him, turning the case into an all-out war that extends into 1940s Germany, 1980s Miami, and 2020s City 17.

The time periods stand out as a highlight of TBE. Each has its own color scheme and musical selection, and the sort of fighting you experience will vary. 1920s Chicago (Noir) features alleys, streets, and warehouses with plenty of verticality for enemy placements. 1940s Germany (Sepia) starts in dark, cramped bunker halls and builds up to storming through trenches under fire. 1980s Miami (Neon) feels like an homage to Hotline Miami with the corporate level design, emphasis on close-quarter action, and levels broken up by doors. 2020s City 17 (Terminus) shifts to the long-range street fighting of Half-Life 2's later chapters, changing up enemy variety with the inclusion of Headcrab Zombies and Striders.

The Burton Equation strips away all but the basic puzzle-solving moments for frantic gun battles and thrilling fight scenes. Your fists make a decent last resort melee weapon, and your magnum can blow away enemies in 1-2 hits, but you'll need to scrounge up enemy weapons to have a fighting chance. Each time period has its own arsenal, which steadily expands in scope as you get deeper into the game. Aside from returning Half-Life 2 weapons, you can expect both practical and zany gun choices, from your typical M1911 pistol to a Tommy Gun modified to shoot Combine pulse ammo.

The Burton Equation's levels are broken up with film noir-style monologues by Detective Burton. The voice work is great, and the actor did a good job of channeling the persona of a hardboiled cop who plays by his own rules. You learn more about Burton and Fabreen, the antagonistic leader of the Metro Gang, through each between-level narration. It does a lot of the story's heavy lifting alongside each time period's ending messages, and it keeps the game from feeling like an excuse for cool action scenes.

TBE's soundtrack fits its settings, but it doesn't always fit its levels. Noir has jazzy background music, but it's too mellow and slow to fit the frantic action you're experiencing. Sepia's music is pretty forgettable overall. Neon has a great selection of synthwave songs that fit its door-kicking, room-clearing battles. Terminus embraces a musical style closer to Half-Life 2's soundtrack, which rounds out the experience in a nice way. It's a shame we didn't get livelier jazz tracks for Noir or Day of Defeat-like orchestral songs for Sepia, but at least the latter 2 time periods got good musical accompaniments.

It's worth repeating that TBE is not a complex Half-Life 2 mod. For better or worse, you won't be solving physics-based puzzles or navigating deserted highways in a scout car. The mod focuses on combat and combat alone, aside from rare moments of finding objects like keycards or scrounging around for secret power-ups. Don't go into this mod expecting anything like Swelter, Entropy Zero 2, or Riot Act, or you'll be disappointed.

I would recommend giving The Burton Equation a shot if you're in the mood for a linear FPS experience. Fans of older shooters might enjoy it, as would people who like stories centered around time travel. It's not a groundbreaking or revolutionary mod, but it's a fun passion project, and that was enough for me.
