Getting Started

This tool requires Cheat Engine (download below). Be careful not to leave this program open. Take your screenshots, then close it. There is potential for a VAC ban from Steam. For the purpose outlined in this guide, it is fine to use.

REQUIRED FILES:
Cheat Engine[www.cheatengine.org]
Obduction Freecam v1.3[drive.google.com] (Updated March 13, 2018)

Once you have all the files, follow these steps:
  1. Launch Obduction
  2. Launch Cheat Engine
  3. Attach Cheat Engine to Obduction by selecting "Obduction-Win64-Shipping.exe" after clicking the highlighted computer icon (or go to File > Open Process).
  4. Load the file you downloaded, "obduction_fc_1.3.CT," in Cheat Engine
  5. Press PAGEDOWN to activate the camera script (or tick the box)
  6. Press PAGEDOWN in game to unlock the freecam and move with the numpad keys

If you do not have a red "X" next to ">> CAMERA" it means the script did not activate and something went wrong. It could mean that all the steps were not followed, I screwed up, or there was a patch that broke it. If so, I'm sorry and am probably working on a fix. Otherwise, continue reading.

Moving Around
With the "CAMERA" script active and after pressing PAGEDOWN, the camera can move with the numpad keys. There are a lot of keys. So, to save space there are 2 modifier keys which change what the numpad keys do. You must press the modifier and numpad key at the same time.

HOTKEY
PAGEDOWN
Freecam on/off
V, F, T
(While held) Move slow, fast, faster ([key]+ALT to toggle)
Below, numpad numbers
(mod: none) 8, 5, 4, 6, 9, 7
Fly forward, backward, left, right, up, down
(mod: PLUS) 8, 5, 4, 6
Aim up, down, left, right
(mod: PLUS) 9, 7
Zoom in, out
(mod: PLUS) 1, 3, 2
Tilt left, right, [reset tilt]
(mod: ENTER) 5, 8, 6, 4
Rotate up, down, left, right
(mod: ENTER) 9, 7
Move closer/farther away from target
(mod: ENTER) 3, 1, 2
Dolly zoom in, out, [reset zoom]

You can also save 9 camera settings. Pressing 0 will undo your changes. Saving a camera is handy if you have the angle right, but you need to go do something like push a button in-game. Save your place by pressing ALT and a standard-row number 1 to 9. Turn off the freecam with PAGEDOWN, do what you need to do, then press the number you saved (without pressing ALT).

HOTKEY
Below, standard numbers
ALT+[number 1 to 9]
Save camera settings
[number 1 to 9]
Load saved camera settings
0 (zero)
Undo/Load previous settings

You can also use END to teleport the player to where the camera is. It's handy for getting around.

HOTKEY
END
Teleport player to camera's current location

Depth Of Field
With "COLOR/DOF" active, turn on Depth of Field (DOF) with "O". You will probably find the default settings blur the whole screen. Pressing "P" will load a preset you can edit easier.

HOTKEY
O
DOF on/off
P
Load DOF preset
V, F, T
Slow, fast, faster adjustments
I, K
Set focus farther away, closer
I, K (+ALT)
Set focus radius larger, smaller
J, L
Set near blur more, less
J, L (+ALT)
Set far blur more, less

Also with this script active, auto-exposure will stop working. You will notice this most when moving from inside to outside. It will be way too bright. Turn the script off, go inside, go back outside to reset the post processing effects, then activate the script again.

If the DOF is not to your liking, there are other postprocessing effects available with another program called Reshade. See next section. You can also use Nvidia's Ansel with ALT+F2.

Reshade
If you can't get the look you're after, Reshade works well with Obduction. It adds many more custom postprocessing effects.

Get Reshade:
Reshade[reshade.me]
(For DOF, "Resolution Scale" must be 100)

Obduction's depth buffer is available to Reshade which mean you can get more DOF effects (like different bokeh shapes) on top of the many other filters available. If you want to use a DOF filter, "Resolution Scale" in Settings must be 100. It took me a while to figure that out since I tend to set mine to 200.

Here is an example shot using Reshade. I saw some a rock-staircase with chains that looked like a good DND-type setting. I wanted a hand-drawn look so I played with some filters and got this:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Filters used (v2.0.3): Levels, Monochrome, Curves, Filmic Pass, Vignette, Adaptive Sharpen, Lumasharpen, HPD, Filmic Curve

Hotsampling
Hotsampling in Obduction is possible with SRWE (Simple Runtime Windows Editor). If you're unfamiliar with hotsampling, it means rendering the game at a resolution higher than your native screen resolution. Like a lot of games this tends to create black bars on the screen in order to keep a 16:9 aspect ratio. Fortunately, Obduction doesn't do this (thank you Cyan!).

Get SRWE:
Simple Runtime Windows Editor[github.com]
(Make sure "Resolution Scale" to 100 to reduce fps drop)

(Optional) Get MSI Afterburner:
MSI Afterburner[www.msi.com]

In order for this to work, you need to set the display to "Windowed." Then, open SRWE and select Obduction. You can now edit the window height and width. If you want to take a shot larger than your screen it is recommended that you select something that fits your screen, get the angle you want, then scale it up to take the shot. Otherwise, you won't be able to see the whole image and know exactly what you're shooting.

You may find that F12 for screenshot no longer works in Windowed mode. MSI Afterburner can be used as a replacement since it can take a screenshot. In place of that, there are many, many other programs that will take a screenshot. Take your pick.

It is also recommended that you set Resolution Scale to 100, other wise your video card will be working harder that necessary and fps will drop.

Misc.
Besides the freecam, there are other scripts you can activate: "GAME SPEED," and "CURSOR/HUD." Click the box next to what you want to activate so that there is a red "X" next to it.

HOTKEY
H
HUD on/off (Cursor, save icon, menu text)
F5 to F11
Game speed slow to fast, F5 = paused, F9 = normal

Game speed is very useful for capturing things that move quickly like flying creatures and teleporter effects. Press F5 with "GAME SPEED" active to pause the game and still be able to move the camera. F6 to F8 sets the speed slow to medium slow. F9 is the default speed and F10 and F11 set the speed much faster. F10 and F11 can also be used as a kind of speed boost for the player if you need it. HUD toggle is useful to hide the cursor when the game is pasued (F5). Don't panic if you see a blank menu screen. This affects text as well.

Examples
Here are some of my favorite shots I've taken as an example of what you can do. Please share your shots if anyone decides to use this. I'd love to see. Finally, thank you Cyan for the beautiful game. =)

Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but for me the freecam don't work. :/
If I activate it, I can't move anymore.

Ah, gotcha. Well thank you for all the hard work you did. I just tested the old script from the CE forums and it's completely broken, too. The thread is gone but I found a copy on my PC.

I know it's broken with the latest release. I'm looking into fixing it but a lot has changed with how it works now that it's VR. :/

Any chance this might get updated for 1.5.2? I'm used to CE, but I have no idea how to program a script myself.

Darnit. I locked myself after the Maray puzzle, now I need a noclip option to fly and unlock the door. But this cheat engine doesn't work on my PC. I dont see the X next to >>. Is there an updated CE table? Pretty please!
