What is a speedrun?

A speedrun is all about trying get through the entire campaign as fast as possible, usually just for fun or to set a new record if you've been speedrunning on the same campaign before.

So how do I speedrun? Are there any things I need to do differently?

1. Have at least 1 other player with you who's good at speedrunning. Chances are you will get jumped by a Jockey if you speedrun alone. Always travel in groups of at least 2 people.

2. Always use a shotgun. Turn around while you're running frequently and shoot zombies that are catching up to you. As soon as you spot a SPAS/autoshotgun, pick it up. As a secondary weapon, use a melee weapon, it's easier for fighting off zombies in case you get surrounded.

3. Just because you have a friend with you does not mean that the two randoms on your team will be speedrunning as well or even understand how it works. You could tell them that you and your friend are doing a speedrun, and that they should just follow you and not fall behind. But in the 1000+ hours that I've been doing speedruns, the randoms fall behind 90% of the time. For this reason, I highly recommend you play in a closed session rathen than a public one if you want to do a speedrun.

4. Don't open every closet, check every room/building, kill every zombies before rushing into the building/street/whatever. That isn't the point of speedrunning. The point is to rush from start to finish as fast as possible. You're not supposed to be scavenging. If there are pills, ammo, weapons and what not lying on the ground, pick it up but don't go looking for it like you do when you're not speedrunning.

5. Close the doors behind you! This is the most important thing to do when you're speedrunning, unless you want a horde of zombies on your a$$ during the whole campaign.

6. If the tank comes, throw a molotov or let your friend take care of it. Circle him then keep running. Remember, you're doing a speedrun. Fighting the tank not only wastes time, but also increases the risk of you and your friend losing health in the process.

7. Get a surround sound headset. This one is optional, but I cannot recommend it enough as it enables you to pinpoint the precise location of each and every special infected. No more surprise hunters or jockeys. If you don't have one you can set your headphones to 6 or 8 channels (5.1 or 7.1) in your audio control panel and turn on Virtual Surround, if your soundcard has this feature.

8. If you have a surround sound gaming headset, warn your teammates about the location of the infected. Not everyone who's playing this game has surround sound, so this can be of great help to your teammates. Communicate through your microphone, but try to keep your messages short.

Example: "Jockey ahead, left side!", "Smoker behind us!", "Tank in the warehouse!".

9.Use pills instead of adrenaline shots. They last longer and give you more health. Adrenaline shots are only useful in very specific situations, such as in the Blood Harvest when the bridge falls down and an endless horde comes at you.

10. The golden rule of speedrunning:
Every man who falls behind, gets left behind.
This obviously doesn't apply to a teammate who's 1 - 15 meters behind you, depending on the circumstances. If a horde is right behind you and your teammate falls behind, leave him.
You'll only increase the odds of getting yourself killed in the process, and then you'll have to do the entire chapter over again.

When I said surround sound headphones I didn't mean actual surround sound, but stereo headphones with surround sound virtualized. Real surround sound headphones are somewhat rare to come by, so I didn't include that in the guide.

A good pair of headphones beats 7.1 surround headphones. Include that in your guide.
